Port Angeles City Pier tower to reopen Wednesday

PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles will celebrate the reopening of the observation tower on city pier with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The ceremony on the pier at 315 N. Lincoln St. will include remarks from city leaders. Afterward, Jopy in Mudville will perform for the weekly Concerts on the Pier series sponsored by the Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts.

The tower has been closed since Nov. 21 after a maintenance inspection revealed significant structural risks.

Repairs, which began in April, included replacement of four column supports and all the connections between the wood piling and tower structure; a partial replacement of the wood decking; paint removal and containment and a full recoating of the tower structure.

The repairs were performed by Rognlin’s Inc. of Aberdeen.

“This project was a significant undertaking, and we appreciate the community’s patience throughout,” City Manager Nathan West said. “We are thrilled to see the tower standing tall once again and look forward to welcoming back both residents and visitors.”

The repairs were funded with $674,464 in city lodging tax funds.
