NEWS BRIEFS: Applicants for awards sought … and other items

SEQUIM — Soroptimist International of Sequim seeks applicants for its $2,000 vocational/technical award.

Applications are due Friday, July 1. They can be accessed by visiting www.sisequim.org.

Young women in the Sequim School District or graduates of Sequim High School, a parochial or private school in the district are invited to apply.

Applicants must be enrolled in a curriculum leading to a nondegreed profession with the goal being to obtain a certificate or license.

The award can be used at the recipient’s discretion.

During a September soroptimist meeting, the winner will be recognized and presented her award.

Beta Nu awards

PORT ANGELES — Two area teachers received grants for professional development from Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

The teachers are Shawne Johnson and Raena Young.

Johnson, a Port Angeles High School art teacher, received a $950 grant for National Boards.

Young, a Jefferson Elementary School fourth-grade teacher, was awarded a $2,500 grant to support her work toward a Master of Arts degree.

Dodie French presented the two teachers their respective grants.

Sequim man earns honors in college

NEWARK, Del. — Anthony Creasey of Sequim has been named to the University of Delaware’s spring 2018 dean’s list.

To qualify, a student must be enrolled full-time and earn a grade-point average of at least 3.33.

Whitworth grad

SPOKANE — Port Angeles native Jessica Burke graduated cum laude from Whitworth University.

She earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in health science.

Former PA man named to honor roll

WACO, Texas — Port Angeles native Wilson Brannon Eiland was named to the dean’s academic honor roll for the 2018 spring quarter at Baylor University.

To qualify, a student must be an undergraduate and maintain at least a 3.7 grade-point average while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.

CU dean’s list

POTSDAM, N.Y. — Sequim native Sophia Lynn Holms was named to Clarkston University’s spring 2018 dean’s list.

To qualify, students must achieve a minimum 3.25 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.

Student graduates

DUBLIN, U.K. — Former Sequim resident Anna Fox graduated from University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, on June 7 with a Doctor of Medicine degree.

She is a 2012 graduate of the University of Washington with a double major in medical anthropology/global health and microbiology.

On, June 11, Fox began a general surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

She hopes to eventually provide surgical care in East Africa, as well as practice in a rural area of the U.S.

Fox graduated from Sequim High School in 2007.

She is the daughter of Lyell Fox and the late Jerry Williamson.

Applications sought for 2019 grants

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is currently accepting applications for grants to be awarded during 2019.

According to a news release, Myrtle Walking intended for her fund to be used for charitable and civic projects that otherwise might not happen.

Applications can be obtained by sending a self-addressed and stamped envelope to the Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, P.O. Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Completed application forms must be submitted by Sunday, Sept. 30.

DSU grad

DICKINSON, N.D. — Gabrielle Hossack of Port Townsend graduated from Dickinson State University.

Hossack received his degree during the 98th annual spring commencement ceremony May 12.

The North Olympic Library System’s “Listen Up! Stories from the Northwest Corner” will be conducting interviews to gather the public’s experiences at libraries.

Interviews are conducted with the participant and an interview partner.

Completed recordings are later archived and become available for listening on the state Library’s Washington Rural Heritage website, and are also available at www.nols.org/listenup.

Call for artists

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is currently seeking artists for a “Summer Fun & Fantasy” themed exhibit at the Port Angeles Library.

Entries are due by Friday, July 6. To submit, email to PA-Art@nols.org with a full name and contact information, a thorough description of the work, as well as a picture, sketch or image of the work.

Local artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

The exhibit will run from Thursday, July 26 through Wednesday,

Oct. 24.

An opening reception will be held 7 p.m. Friday, July 27 during the library’s Burning Man-inspired “Reading Person” Art Blastapalooza.

Volunteer training

PORT TOWNSEND —East Jefferson Fire-Rescue (EJFR) announced it will test for volunteers and volunteer resident firefighters Thursday, July 12.

Those interested in testing must complete an application. To obtain an application, visit www.efjr.org.

Completed applications are due no later than

5 p.m. Friday, July 6 to the EJFR administrative offices at 24 Seton Road.

The testing process will begin at 5 p.m. July 12 including a written exam, physical agility test and interview.

For candidates who wish to prepare for the agility exam, a practice test will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 10.

Both the practice and actual exams will be held at EJFR Fire Station 1-5, 35 Critter Lane.

In-district residency is not required.

Roles available include firefighting, station maintenance, public education, tender operations (drivers) and Emergency Medical Technician response.

Volunteer resident firefighters typically join the department in pursuit of a career in the fire service.

EJFR pays for their training to become International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Firefighter I and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certified.

They typically work a 48-hour per week shift alongside career firefighters and receive a monthly stipend, according to a news release.

Planning vacancy

PORT ANGELES — The city has announced that it is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on its Planning Commission.

Applications are due Friday, July 6. To obtain an application, visit www.cityofpa.us and click “download application,” or visit the City Manager’s Office in City Hall at 321 E. Fifth St.

The members of the commission review long range planning proposals, including amendments and updates to the city’s Comprehensive Plan, and changes to land use controls and make recommendations to the council.

Members are appointed to four-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms and serve without compensation.

Selected applicants may undergo an interview process by the City Council prior to appointment, according to a news release.

Grief support

PORT ANGELES — Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County (VHOCC) will begin a grief support group series Monday,

July 9.

The group is free and requires preregistration. To register, call VHOCC’s office at 360-452-1511.

The group will be held for five consecutive Mondays from 1 p.m. to

3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Debby Smith will serve as the group’s facilitator.

Smith has been a registered nurse for

35 years and has been a hospice volunteer for

25 years.

Her goal is to provide an atmosphere for open dialogue about the death and grief process and lessen the fear and anxiety associated with loss, according to a news release.

Equipment test

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Elections Office has set Tuesday, July 10 for a logic and accuracy test for its ballot tabulation equipment.

Members of the public are invited to observe the

9 a.m. test in the Elections Center in the Clallam County Courthouse basement at 223 E. Fourth St. Room 72.

The purpose of the test is to ensure every vote is counted accurately.

Gala garden show

SEQUIM — Soroptimist International of Sequim invites artists to submit garden-related artistry for its March 2019 Gala Garden Show.

Entries are due by Sunday, July 15. To submit an entry, visit soroptimist’s website at www.sequimgardenshow.com to receive an artwork packet.

Completed artwork packets are then to be submitted via email to sisgsartwork@gmail.com or postmarked to SIS Artwork, P.O. Box 2076, Sequim, WA 98362.

Selected artwork will be displayed during the gala show and during other public events prior to the gala.

Whomever is selected will also be offered a free vendor booth at the gala.

MILWAUKEE — Port Angeles native Audra Perrizo has been named to Marquette University’s 2018 spring dean’s list.

Perrizo is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

Port Angeles students graduate from Gonzaga

SPOKANE — Three former Port Angeles residents recently graduated from Gonzaga University.

Hunter Hathaway, Anthony Pinza and Rozalyn Piper participated in the university’s May 13 commencement ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial Arena.

Piper graduated magna cum laude.

The students have either completed their undergraduate degree or are expected to complete their degree requirements this year, according to a news release.

Six Port Angeles natives have been named to Gonzaga University’s spring 2018 dean’s and president’s list.

Rozayln Piper was named to the president’s list.

To qualify, a student must achieve a 3.85 to

4.0 grade-point average.

Those named to the dean’s list are Madeline Fritschler, Nicholas Fritscher, Hunter Hathaway, Anthony Pinza and Emily Van Dyken.

To qualify, a student must achieve a 3.5 to

3.84 grade-point average.
