Craft sessions set to make gifts for Canoe Journey

PORT ANGELES — The public is invited to help create gifts for Canoe Journey participants during a craft session from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and on May 29.

Both sessions will be in the lower lobby at Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

All materials will be supplied and a skilled craftsperson will be on hand to provide guidance to volunteers.

The annual Canoe Journeys bring First Nations and Native American communities together.

Tribal Nations from as far North as Alaska and as far south as California paddle, for days to weeks, in cedar canoes to join a host tribe in feasting, dancing, singing and gift exchange.

This year’s journey, the Paddle to Elwha, will be hosted by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe from July 31 to Aug. 5.

Field Hall also is collecting donations to support the paddlers.

A donation bin has been placed near the coffee bar in the main lobby. Community members are requested to contribute the following items:

• Travel-sized toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and soap.

• Flashlights and headlamps.

• Batteries, especially sizes AA and AAA.

• Rain ponchos and waterproof gear.

• Reusable water bottles.

• Sunscreen and insect repellent.

• First aid kits or small first aid items such as bandages or ointments.

• Hand warmers.

• Protein bars or trail snacks.

• Ziplock bags or dry bags.

• Camping-size packs of tissues or wipes.
