LETTERS: Allegiance misplaced

Let me preface my remarks by saying I’m a former Republican for over 30 years and retired military officer.

As a member of the armed forces, I took an oath to support and defend the the Constitution of the United States.

I served presidents of both parties during my 20-year career and was often times disappointed with the outcome of elections.

But I also knew that our electoral process and the peaceful transition of power was the cornerstone of our democracy.

What I’ve witnessed since Nov. 3 makes our country look less like a constitutional republic and more like a banana republic.

The president’s efforts to overturn the the duly elected government and subvert the will of the people is sedition.

Officials of his own party, federal judges and Supreme Court Justices whom he appointed are now called “enemies of the people.”

Those who support the president call themselves patriots.

You don’t have to like the president-elect or agree with anything he does over the next four years.

You can make your voice heard again in 2024.

But it’s time for so-called patriots to pledge their allegiance to their country’s constitution and the rule of law, not to a political party or an individual.
