LETTER: Severe penalties for pointing laser at aircraft

A recent article in the PDN titled, “Trial for Laser Charge Delayed,” (PDN, July 1) revealed that a local man is accused of firing his laser at a Coast Guard helicopter.

This begs the question: Why would someone fire a laser into the cockpit of an aircraft in flight if not to distract or injure the pilot?

The operator of the laser can’t see the laser beam footprint on the aircraft or the pilot’s reaction.

They can only get satisfaction by observing the consequence of distracting or injuring a pilot and that consequence is an aircraft accident.

This would most likely cause multiple deaths.

The article mentioned that other people convicted of laser attack received only moderate sentences.

What are these prosecutors thinking?

Probation or just months of incarceration are ridiculously lenient sentences for these assaults.

These laser-wielding psychopaths should be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and sent to prison for years.
