LETTER: Firearms regulations should mirror those of vehicle ownership

In the “Armed Citizenry” letter of Aug. 28, the writer proposes that the “best way to combat armed shooters is to shoot back, by lawfully armed citizens.”

Well, let’s just consider how that would actually play out.

Imagine a mall with a thousand citizens wandering around in it, many of them armed.

An armed crazy person walks in and opens fire, several citizens immediately return fire, and in the confusion it becomes unclear who the bad guy is.

Within a few seconds it’s a chaotic bloodbath and our lawfully armed citizens are shooting each other willy-nilly.

Is this a good outcome?

No, but it’s exactly what the original crazy person probably wanted.

There has got to be a better way to combat armed shooters than proposing that we all arm ourselves to the teeth, as if Armageddon were just around the corner.

I believe we still live in a civilized society with a bright future for our kids and grandkids.

Surely it should be possible in a civilized society to consider enacting laws to regulate the ownership and use of firearms — training, license, registration and insurance, just like a owning a motor vehicle.
