UPDATE — These details on Mario Hackney’s capture on Wednesday were released by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office today (Thursday):

— The 10-hour operation began Wednesday morning, when a search warrant for his arrest was obtained for the residence,

— Law enforcement personnel from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Angeles Police Department, Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team and the U.S. Border Patrol surrounded the residence and secured the scene.

— For about 90 minutes, officials using a bullhorn attempted to contact Hackney.

— During that time, they deployed a “throw phone” through a window in the house to try to establish a line of communication with those inside.

He made no statements to officers at the scene.

OUR EARLIER STORY:

PORT ANGELES — A man wanted for first-degree attempted murder returned to the scene of the crime — and was arrested.

Convicted felon and fugitive Mario Wayne Hackney, 45, was booked into Clallam County Jail on Wednesday after a multi-agency team of local and federal law enforcement officers found him at a residence in the 200 block of Cameron Road west of Port Angeles.

It was there that he allegedly stepped out from behind a shed on Sept. 20 with a shotgun and fired at a man in a pickup, peppering the side of the truck with buckshot but missing the intended victim, court documents said.

The man crashed the pickup, authorities said, and while running away, he fell, injuring his hands, knees, elbows and chest.

The shooting led to an intensive four-week hunt for Hackney by law-enforcement agencies.

Officers were tipped that Hackney might be back at the Cameron Road house, and he was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.

A previous informant’s tip led officers to Hackney in another area on Sept. 23, but he got away after crashing his vehicle and bolting into the woods.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said Hackney’s arrest was the result of “10-hour operation by local and federal law enforcement agencies” but gave few other details. They released two photos of the arrest.

“Undersheriff [Ron] Peregrin credited the successful capture of Hackney to numerous tips and information received from the public and teamwork by the law enforcement agencies involved,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“Peregrin said that law enforcement made use of social media to send and receive information about Hackney through the use of Facebook, Nixle, Sheriff’s Website, local media and citizens involved in local Neighborhood Watch programs.”

North Olympic Crime Stoppers had offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to Hackney’s arrest.

Hackney, who also used the name Don Lennon, had been formally charged in absentia with attempted first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and officers considered him to be armed and dangerous.

According to court documents, the man Hackney is accused of shooting at had arrived at the residence to pick up a woman at about 11 a.m. Sept. 20.

Neither the man nor the woman involved has been identified by law enforcement.

Hackney, who was described as a close friend of the woman, allegedly stepped out from behind the shed and pointed a shotgun at the man, who was standing beside the truck about 35 feet away.

The man jumped back in the truck and was attempting to back up when he said he saw Hackney raise the shotgun higher and point it at him.

The driver ducked and was not hit, but the blast hit the side of the pickup, which went backward down a hill, spun around and crashed into a ditch, according to law enforcement.

Hackney, who then fled on foot, escaped a multi-agency dragnet by land and air that lasted until 8 p.m. on the day of the incident.

A white minivan linked to Hackney was found at a residence two days later in Diamond Point, on the east side of Clallam County, and authorities put a watch on the vehicle to see if he would return for it.

Sheriff’s deputies said they intercepted him in the van near Blyn around midnight on Sept. 23 and chased him about 4 miles up Woods Road, where he crashed into an embankment.

Hackney disappeared into the woods, and tracking dogs were unable to find him.

Hackney has nine felony convictions for second-degree identity theft, drug possession, malicious mischief, possession of stolen property and second-degree burglaries, the sheriff’s office said.

Chadwick Cargo, 40, a neighbor of Hackney’s on Cameron Road, was later arrested for investigation of first-degree rendering criminal assistance,

Authorities allege that Cargo provided transportation to Hackney.
