WOODEN BAT BASEBALL: Port Angeles Lefties win their opener Friday night

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties started off their 2022 season with a 14-1 romp over the Northwest Honkers at Civic Field on Friday night.

The Lefties scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised the rest of the way. The game was called after seven innings. The Honkers are a Pacific International League team based in Seattle.

The Lefties won with patience, taking 13 walks from Honkers pitchers to go along with eight hits. The big hitting star of the night was Gabriel DeJesus, a Yakima product who plays for Wenatchee Valley College. He had a pair of doubles, scored three runs and walked three times.

Ian Winterhalder of nearby Grays Harbor College also had a double, a single, drove in two runs, scored a run and walked.

Riley Parker, one of several players on the Lefties from Cal State San Bernardino, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, while prized prospect B.Y. Choi of the New Mexico Militarty Insitute was 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk.

Hunter Kirkpatrick (San Diego City College) walked twice and scored two runs. Derek Bough had three walks, a stolen base and scored two runs.

On the mound, the trio of Andrew Quinones (Cal State San Bernardino), John Pfeffer (Cal State San Bernardino) and Will Isaly (East Central University of Oklahoma) allowed just six hits, three walks and one earned run while striking out 11. Quinones started and went three innings, allowing four hits and a run. Pfeffer pitched three innings in reliefly, allowing one hit, one walk and no runs while striking out six to earn the victory. Isally struck out two in one inning pitched.

The Lefties were scheduled to play Saturday but it was raining in the afternoon and unclear if the game was going to be played. They are scheduled to play at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Civic Field with good weather forecast in wrapping up their exhibition series against the Honkers. The Lefties have Monday off, then begin West Coast League play on the road Tuesday at the Victoria HarbourCats.
