PORT TOWNSEND — For the first time in 20 years Port Townsend High School has a Nisqually League championship football team.

Now the Redskins are looking at the state playoffs and a shot at the state Class 2A title.

“We hope it’s a full four weeks for us,” said Port Townsend coach James Fleisher.

Port Townsend (9-1 overall) will open the 2A state playoffs against Lynden Christian (6-3) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Silverdale Memorial Stadium.

This a big turnaround for a Redskins team that finished 2-7 in 2002.

“The team is excited,” said Fleisher. “It’s been a long time since Port Townsend has accomplished a league title.”

Lynden Christian finished at 10-1 last season and lost to Elma in the state semifinal game.
