Port Angeles flag flies over B.C. food festival

ESQUIMALT, B.C. — Visitors to Esquimalt’s Ribfest last weekend needn’t blink twice.

Yes, it’s the Port Angeles city flag flying on a flagpole over the Victoria suburb’s community center.

It’s part of a “twinning” agreement in which the two cities promote each other’s food festival, starting with the rib festival in Esquimalt.

The Esquimalt flag is scheduled to fly over the Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival in Port Angeles from Oct. 10-12.

“[Port Angeles] approached us about this arrangement,” Tom Woods, chair of Esquimalt Ribfest, told the Victoria News.

“They’ve benefited for so long from Canadians going there for Crab Fest, they wanted to return the favor. It’s about cross-promotion.”

Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins said the twinning offers the potential for the rib festival to draw a bigger audience and put the township in a positive light.
