PORT TOWNSEND — A 44-year old Port Townsend woman was in serious condition in Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit with abdominal and chest injuries after a one-vehicle crash Monday.

Deborah DeLeo was heading southbound on Discovery Road when her red Chevrolet S-10 pickup drifted across the oncoming lane and struck a telephone pole on the east side of the road, in front of Discovery Bay Camp & Missions Center.

DeLeo, who was airlifted to Harborview in Seattle, later told officers she had fallen asleep at the wheel, according to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesperson Bill Beezley.

The force of the impact broke loose one power line, which drooped to approximately 9 feet off the ground.

After striking the pole, the pickup rebounded backwards 11 feet.

The imprint of the pole intruded approximately two feet into the front of the pickup.

Both airbags in the pickup were deployed.

It appeared that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Gordon Tamura, who said that no charges were pending.
