BUSINESS BRIEFS — British Columbia teachers’ strike affects businesses, too . . . and other local business items

VICTORIA — A three-month teachers strike that has gone into the new school term is having more of an effect on just parents, students and educators.

Businesses are also starting to feel the effect, said Bruce Carter, CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

“There are a number of locations that rely heavily on students who have a significant amount of discretionary income to support those businesses,” Carter told the Victoria News.

“These businesses will be suffering.”

More than 40,000 members of the British Clumbia Teachers Federation are on strike across the province in a walkout that began two weeks before the end of the past school year.

Both B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Peter Fassbender insisted last week that the province won’t legislate the teachers back to work.

At issue are wages and benefits.

Meat to be topic

SEQUIM — Tom and Holly Clark of Clark Farms will discuss how locally farmed meat is produced at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The couple now raise grass-fed, grass-finished cattle and lamb, pastured pigs, pastured heritage turkeys and chickens grazing in open spaces.

The talk is free and open to the public.
