PDN takes 8 awards in state competition

SEATTLE — One current Peninsula Daily News staff member and a former staffer received four awards each in the Washington Press Association’s statewide 2011 Communications Contest banquet at the Museum of Flight.
Senior Staff Writer Paul Gottlieb won second place in investigative/watchdog reporting for the Aug. 7 article, “Hiker Told Park of Aggressive Goat Before His Death” and in breaking news for the Dec. 29 article, “7 Cedars Casino Workers Save Heart Attack Victim.”
Gottlieb also won third-place awards in general features for the July 17 article, “Fast Boats Put Agents In Close Distance With ‘Bad Guys’ On The Watery Border,” and in agriculture-environmental reporting for the Sept. 3 article, “Elwha Dam Removals: Ediz Hook Off Port Angeles Will Start Growing Again.”
Former Special Sections Editor Trish McMahon won first place in cover art for the Oct. 30 special advertising section, “Celebrating Nurses” and in page layout for the Oct. 30 special advertising section, “Celebrate Elwha!”
Features
McMahon won second place in general features for the article “A Natural Place,” about a Seattle couple who got engaged and married on the North Olympic Peninsula, which appeared in the in the February 2011 Bride & Groom special advertising section.
McMahon also won second place in cover art for the September 2011 special advertising section on sprint boat races that were held in Port Angeles.
There were 177 entries in the contest.
