Subdivision developer to appeal Planning Commission snub to City Council

SEQUIM — A developer whose proposed subdivision was shot down by the Sequim Planning Commission this week for the second time said Thursday that he’s “absolutely” appealing the decision to the City Council.
On a 5-2 vote Tuesday, commission members rejected GLC Homes’ plan for a 16.4-acre development with 45 duplexes and 2.5 acres of commercial space on West Sequim Bay Road near its intersection with North Rhodefer Road.
Commissioners Dick Foster and John Bridge voted to approve the project.
A similar project calling for 39 houses, 14 duplexes and five commercial lots on 14 acres at the corner of East Washington Street and Rhodefer Road gained Planning Commission approval, however. The vote was 6-1, with Scott Adler dissenting.
“It was a surprise,” said Gerry Engler, president of the Portland, Ore.-based GLC Homes.
“It was even more of a surprise when they approved essentially the same project a quarter mile away. . . . I thought they would either both get approved or they would both get denied.”
Two-hour deliberation
More than two hours of discussion preceded the denial, ranging over a host of growth issues facing Sequim, including land use, development density and the ever-increasing cost of housing.
