Sekiu: Angler hauls in coho weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces

Sekiu has produced another record-breaking coho salmon.
On Wednesday, less than two weeks after the previous state record was broken for coho in salt water, James Veselovec of Tacoma boated a silver that weighed 22 pounds, 8 ounces.
The weight was confirmed by state fisheries officials who inspected the salmon at Olson’s Resort, 360-963-2311.
“I hadn’t been catching any big fish, but this definitely makes up for it!” exclaimed Veselovec.
He caught the coho at 7:30 a.m. while trolling a white hoochy at a depth of 25 feet about 3 miles north of Sekiu.
On Sept. 8, Milo Walker of Port Angeles landed a silver of 21 pounds, 13 ounces, while dragging a herring on a downrigger in 60 feet of water about 2 miles north of Sekiu.
The old record had been 20 pounds, 6 ounces, and had stood since 1996.
