ROWING: OPRA’s Mishler to represent Northwest at Worlds

PORT ANGELES — Nathan Mishler, a member of the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association, will compete at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla., beginning on Friday.

The World Rowing Championships will team up with USRowing’s Under-19 National Team to present the Youth Regional Challenge. Mishler, 17, will represent the Northwest Region at the event.

“This is a really exciting event that will allow each region to showcase its talent on the world stage,” said Steve Hargis, the development coach of the USRowing Junior National Team. “Many of these athletes are aspiring to become elite-level athletes, so to be able to train, attend opening ceremonies and ultimately race as part of the world championship program really is the opportunity of a lifetime.”

In addition to the opportunity to race on a world-class course and be part of the 2017 World Rowing Championships, athletes will get a chance to continue their development, jump-start their 2017-18 season, and earn bragging rights for their region.

Mishler started rowing in spring 2016. After just two months of learning this new sport he earned a bronze medal at the Northwest Regional Rowing Championships in June 2016 in the novice 2x event along with teammate Daniel Weaver.

This year he came in second at the novice event at the Northwest Indoor Rowing Championships in Seattle, as well as winning several medals in varsity events throughout the Northwest region.

Mishler is hoping to continue competing on the world level and is hoping to earn a rowing scholarship to college.
