AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Rowers compete in Port Angeles Harbor; Balance bike free event

PORT ANGELES — The first Edizgigantus Coastal Rowing Regatta took place in Port Angeles Harbor last week, hosted by the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association.

Cooper Disque of Port Angeles set the pace in the 5-kilometer race, powering through the often windy conditions in 27 minutes, 8 seconds. James Lesniak of La Push rowed his fastest time, completing the course in 34:55. Peggy DeYoung and Jacob Teunge, both of Port Angeles, were the first two-person boat across the line, finishing in 31:30.

Edizgigantus gets its name from a sea serpent said to have plied the waters near Ediz Hook, closely allied with the Cadborosaurus from Vancouver Island. This was the first of a series of coastal rowing events to be held in Port Angeles this year.

On Aug. 3, there will be a Beach Sprint rowing event on Hollywood Beach. Last year the Beach Sprint regatta was the largest amateur event of its kind in the United States, bringing competitors from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia to the Olympic Peninsula. More information is available under the Coastal Rowing tab at PArowing.org.

Balance bike event

PORT ANGELES — The Lincoln Park BMX Track will host a free balance bike open house for kids 5 and younger from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Any child 5 and younger who is on a balance bike and just learning how to ride a bike is invited. Bikes, balance bikes and helmets are free to use.
