STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Sequim’s Little second, Hastings third at state

East Jefferson doubles team takes fifth in 1A

SEATTLE — Sequim’s Garrett Little finished second at the 2A state tennis championships, while Kendall Hastings for the Wolves finished third in the girls 2A state championships.

Little beat Port Angeles’ Reef Gelder (2-0) in the semifinals. He went on to play Zach Chai of Sehome in the finals, losing 2-0.

Gelder, meanwhile, played Vijay Lin of Pullman in the third-place match and lost 2-0. He finished sixth in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Hastings was the third Olympic Peninsula tennis player who made it to the semifinals. She lost 2-0 to Rhoda Wang of Pullman in the semis, then beat Teegan Devries, a familiar opponent from North Kitsap High School, 2-0 in the third-place match.

Wang ended up winning the girls state championship by beating Taraneh Khalighi of Sammamish, the District 2/3 champion.

Little made it to the semis by beating Conner Kunz of West Valley (Spokane) 2-0, and by beating Nathan Gruman of Sehome 2-0. Gelder made it to the semifinals by beating Andrew Walczyk of Fort Vancouver 2-0 and Indigo Gallagher-Zapf of North Kitsap 2-0.

Hastings started her tournament by beating Audrey Zdunich of R.A. Long 2-0 in her opening match and then beat Lowa Gresham of Bellingham 2-1 in the quarterfinals. She lost 2-0 to Rhoda Wang of Pullman in the semis.

Doubles

In the 1A doubles tournament, East Jefferson’s Reid Martin and Stuart Dow finished fifth, beating Goldendale’s E. Golding and K. Blunt, 2-0.

Martin and Dow lost their opening match to J. Kirk and B. Sachman of Omak 2-0. They bounced back by beating R. Bjur and J. Diaz of Toppenish 2-0, then won again 2-0 over B. Rasmusson and K. Willard of Manson to qualify for the fifth-place match.

In the 2A doubles tournament, the Port Angeles team of Edun Bailey and Jacob Miller won a match. They started off winning 2-1 over the team of Javyn Han/Bryce Kuykendall of W.F. West, then lost 2-0 to Jackson Warner and Nicholas Crowley-Koehler of Bremerton. They wrapped up losing 2-0 to Ethan Gillespie and Mason Chmielewski of North Kitsap.
