ABERDEEN — The Wilder Baseball team took advantage of Saturday’s sunny weather to sweep a doubleheader from Aberdeen Legion.
A doubleheader between the same teams was rained out Sunday as Wilder improves to 7-3 on the year.
Wilder blasted Aberdeen 12-0 in Saturday’s first game and beat the host 5-2 in the second contest.
Wilder coach Rob Merritt was a little cautious about the meaning of the doubleheader win.
“We have got a ways to go but we’re getting there,” he said.
The pitching, which has been a little wild at times this year, is getting there, too, Merritt said.
“I have told our pitchers that we just can’t walk people,” he added.
In the first game, starting pitcher AJ Konopaski (2-1) had a stellar performance, allowing just three hits while allowing no runs and no walks in 6 2/3 innings.
He also fanned 10 batters.
Wilder jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and broke it open completely with eight runs in the top of the sixth stanza.
The North Olympic Peninsula team had seven hits in the game but took advantage of six Aberdeen errors.
Konopaski helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
Cole Uvila went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Cody Sullivan went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Kyler Morgan was 2-for-3, scoring a run.
Close second game
Aberdeen gave more of a battle in the second contest.
Wilder went ahead 2-0 in the second and Aberdeen got one of the runs back in the bottom of the same inning.
Three more runs in the fourth inning game Wilder a 5-1 lead and another run by Aberdeen in the fourth made it a 5-2 game.
The score held the rest of the way as Spencer Middleton (2-1) picked up the win after pitching the first four innings.
Hayden McCartney earned the save, pitching the final three innings.
The two pitchers combined for a five-hitter.
Devin Manix led the way at the plate by going 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI while scoring two runs.
Both Easton Napiontek and Uvila went 1-for-3 each and scored a run a piece.
Uvila had an RBI while Napiontek ripped a double.
Wilder next will play a doubleheader against Kitsap Baseball at Legion Field in Poulsbo on Saturday, and then the two will have a doubleheader at Civic Field in Port Angeles on Sunday.
