FORKS — The Forks baseball team had a shot for undisputed first place in the Pacific 2B League, but the Spartans found out they still have work to do to get past Ilwaco.

Ilwaco won a doubleheader at Fred Orr Park 9-0 and 15-1, snapping Forks’ 12-game winning streak and winning the league championship. Ilwaco came in to the doubleheader one game behind Forks for the league lead as the sweep dropped the Spartans down to third place.

Forks is still in the postseason, which begins Friday.

In game one, Jeremy Hutto was 2-for-3 with a triple, while Gunner Rogers hit a double. Aidan Salazar and Rogers combined to allow five earned runs as Forks was hurt by four errors.

In the second game, the Spartans managed just two hits, one by Bubba Hernandez and the other by Dylan Micheau. Hernandez scored the Spartans’ run.

Forks (13-4, 7-2) begins District 4 postseason play with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Friday. The location and opponent has not been set yet, but it appears the Spartans’ first opponent will be Wahkiakum or Rainier.

Boys soccer Bainbridge 12, Port Angeles 1

BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles boys soccer team got off to a slow start and was never able to get on track against a good Bainbridge club that beat the Roughriders 12-1.

“The Spartans scored early and often in the first half against the Riders on a damp field at Bainbridge Island,” said coach Chris Saari. “The skill, ball movement and speed of the Spartans exposed Port Angeles defensively. Port Angeles made some changes at halftime that made it possible to see a few players in different positions.

“Freshman Hunter Eller played the first half in goal for Port Angeles and Kevin Royack played the second half in goal. Kevin made a few big saves to deny the Spartans and was aggressive coming off his line,” Saari said.

The game did feature sophomore Matthew Miller’s 21st goal of the season.

“Leif Moody played outside back in the second half and got an assist on Matthew Miller’s 21st goal [in the 55th minute],” Saari said. “Leif hit a long free kick into the Spartans penalty box and Matthew beat the keeper on the dribble after the ball popped loose from the initial challenge.”

Saari named Miller his offensive player of the match, Royack the defensive player of the match and Moody the transition player of the match.

Port Angeles (2-11, 3-12) will finish its season on the road Thursday against Bremerton (6-5, 6-6).
