PA earns fifth seed
ENUMCLAW — The Riders scored two routs in sub-district play Friday to earn the No. 5 seed into the 2A bi-district tournament next week.
Port Angeles remained unbeaten against anyone not named Sequim after dropping 2A SPSL challenger Sumner 10-0 in the first round and KingCo representative Interlake 9-2 in the next.
Stacy Webb threw every single pitch for the Riders in the two-game sweep, striking out 17 batters in 12 innings of work while surrendering just two earned runs.
That included a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the opening round victory over Sumner, a contest that ended in five innings after a Rider offensive barrage in the fifth plated six runners to trigger the 10-run mercy rule.
“It was like a frenzy,” Port Angeles coach Buddy Bear said of the fifth inning. “We were actually looking to play some more.”
Port Angeles finished with 28 hits as a team in the two games.
Hannah Wahto and Mariah Frazier each tallied five hits total in the two games.
Frazier finished 5-for-9 all together, with two doubles, three triples and four runs scored, while Wahto was 5-for-8 with a double, triple, three runs scored and three RBIs.
“We’ve got some good momentum going into districts,” Bear said. “I’m pretty confident.”
Port Angeles (16-2 overall) will play No. 12 seed Eatonville (7-10) in the first round of the double-elimination bracket next Friday at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.
