PORT ANGELES — Sequim swept the singles matches and won No. 1 doubles to nip archrival Port Angeles 4-3 in nonleague boys tennis action Friday.
“It seems like every time we play Sequim, it comes down to teh wire and [Friday] was no different,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“It’s so much fun to play them because the matches are competitive and we have a lot of respect for their program.”
The No. 1 singles and doubles matches were the most highly competitive matches of the day.
Sequim’s Byron Boots beat Hayden McCartney 6-3, 6-4 in the top singles match while Evan Hill and Donavan Lee of Sequim held off Connor Reid and Sam Beasley 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
There were two other close matches as Chase Walsh and Kevin Herzog of Port Angeles defeated Will Prorok and Jeremy Huls 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles and Derek Schumacher and Kapono Rogers of Port Angeles nipped Rayhan Ayastine and Issaih Dewan 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 doubles.
The Roughriders next play at Bremerton on Monday.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins had their best offensive game of the year but couldn’t keep up with Vashon superstars Nick Amundson and Nick Betz, who combined for five touchdowns and more than 300 total yards Saturday night in Nisqually League action.
“Our offense did really well in the first half but our young kids just couldn’t keep up,” coach Tom Webster said.
Sophomore quarterback Jacob King played for the first time this year and led the Port Townsend offense with 15 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
He also had a 15-yard score through the air to Austin Graham, the lone senior on the team.
Graham carried the ball five times for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Graham also led on defense with 11 solo tackles and five assists and a fumble recovery.
“Graham has been a workhorse for us all year,” Webster said.
Tim Russell also had a strong defensive day with seven solo tackles and three assists.
“We played hard,” Webster said. “I’m encouraged that the kids are getting what we are trying to do.”
The Redskins next play at Lakeside on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a nonleague game.

Port Townsend 4, Friday Harbor 0
PORT TOWNSEND — Irina Lyons and Jewel Johnson scored two goals each to lead the Redskins over Friday Harbor in nonleague action Saturday.
“It was important that we won today,” coach Ryan Moss said. “We said it at the start of our season that we need to win our home games and [Saturday] we did just that.
“Friday Harbor played well. They have some good players but we put the majority of our chances away and that’s what made the difference.’
Lyons scored in the 24th minute on a Lily Murock assist and the 44th minute on a Jewel Johnson assist.
Johnson scored in the 31st minute on a penalty kick and again in the 36th minute.
The Redskins (3-2) travel to North Kitsap on Tuesday in an Olympic League game.

POULSBO — Darby Flanagan won two events to spark the Redskins to the Olympic League win Thursday.
Flanagan took the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free.
The Port Townsend 200 medley relay team took first with a school record and a district qualifying time in 2:04.51.
Relay swimmers were Mazy Braden, Serena Vilage, Olivia Cremeans and Renada Walcome.
Others earning first-place finishes were Vilage in the 200 IM, Walcome in the 50 free, Raven Elias in the 100 free and Braden in the 100 backstroke.
