Sports: Record pink salmon taken west of Port Angeles

A state record pink salmon was caught near Pillar Point this week, but the fish will never go down in the history books.

The 14-pound humpy (dressed weight) was taken Monday by an angler fishing out of Silver King Resort.

Herb Rempel, who runs the resort with his wife, Gloria, told me Thursday he thought it was a chinook when he first laid eyes on it. (King salmon are now out of season in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.)

Upon further inspection, Rempel realized he was looking at a pink.

“I couldn’t believe that thing,” Rempel said. “That was the biggest one I’ve ever seen.”
