FORKS — The Forks boys basketball team broke out of its four-game slump in a big way.
Braden Decker swished in 21 points to spark the Spartans past Rochester 57-29 in SWL-Evergreen Division action Tuesday night.
“It was a great team victory,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
“Every single player stepped up and did something for the team even if they didn’t score.
“We needed it after we struggled in the last couple of games.”
The win broke a four-game losing streak, three of them league competition.
The Spartans, who were 10-1 before their losing streak, are now 11-5 overall and 5-3 in league.
Tre Harris also scored in double figures for the Spartans with 10 points.
“Decker did a great job, not only on offense, but he also held their best player [Tyler Gedney] essentially to six points the entire game,” Gooding said.
Gedney did end up with nine points for the game when he netted a 3-pointer in the final minute.
“[Willie] Hatch came off the bench and gave us a lot of energy, and [Leo] Gonzales rebounded the ball extremely well.”
Forks next plays at Hoquiam on Friday night.

QUILCENE — The Rangers stayed right with senior-dominated Puget Sound Adventist during the entire game in Sea-Tac League competition Tuesday night.
Puget Sound, the second-place team in league, had its hands full the entire night against Quilcene.
“We played them pretty tough,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.
“I was happy with our defensive effort. We didn’t shoot as well as we have been but our guys bagttled hard.”
Jake Pleines and Jake Jordan combined for 28 points for Quilcene with Pleines netting 16 and Jordan adding 12.
Puget Sound’s league-leading scorer Andrew Nye led everybody with 21 points while Ben Ashton added 16.

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys lost a Nisqually League heartbreaker despite 30 points from Rafael Pagasian on Tuesday night.
Down by 10 going into the fourth quarter, the Cowboys rallied but fell just short, outscoring Charles Wright 23-17 in the final period.
Derek Ajax added 10 points for Chimacum, which fell to 0-8 in league and 2-12 overall.
The Cowboys now will try to get their first league victory at Eatonville on Friday night.

CHIMACUM — Audrey Thacker and Mallori Cossell combined for 22 points as the Cowboys fought hard in the Nisqually League loss Tuesday night.
“The girls played a good game in this one,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said.
“The defense was solid all night and we moved the ball well on offense, and got a lot of good looks for everyone.
“It was nice to see them knock down a lot of those open shots [Tuesday] night, which has not happened the last few games.
“I think for me I am pleased with my team but disgusted with the way the game got called. I have never been party to a game in which one team shoots 34 free throws and the other shoots one.”
The difference in the final score essentially was the free-throw shooting, Huntingford said.
“We just couldn’t get a call on a shot all night, and the contact was certainly there.”
The Cowboys got within six points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get closer than that.
“Mallori Cossell has really stepped up her level of play the last few games, especially on defense, and her shot has started falling for her, too,” Huntingford said.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort.”
Audrey Thacker shot a team-high 12 points for Chimacum while Mallori added 10.

ROCHESTER — Jillian Raben scorched the nets for 24 points but the Spartans fell in the SWL-Evergreen Division game Tuesday night.
“We probably played the best first-quarter basketball of the year against Rochester,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said.
The Spartans outscored Rochester 18-12 in the first period.
“We came out strong and handled their pressure very well. Jillian Raben had eight of her 24 that quarter.
“Three of her teammates scored during the quarter as well to keep the scoring balanced.
“Unfortunately we had a letdown in the second quarter, yet our second-quarter defense allowed us to be tied at halftime.”
Raben also was hot in the third quarter, scoring 10 of the Spartans’ 14 points in that period.
“We had our opportunities in the fourth quarter but just couldn’t contain Sierra Seymour and Keeli Demers, who accounted for 15 of their 17 fourth-quarter points,” Scheibner said.
“We played hard the entire game and played better then when we played them back in December.”
The Spartans continue their streak of playing well the past two weeks, Scheibner said.
“We have been playing a lot better the last four or five games. We’ve had our opportunities to win the game in the fourth quarter, which is one of our team goals.
“We are competing and have been in most every game we’ve played recently. Now, we just need to go out and do it [get the win].”
Forks is 1-13 overall and 1-6 in league.

QUILCENE — The Rangers were once again missing three key players during Sea-Tac League play against the Sharks on Tuesday night.
Quilcene played well in the beginning and ending of the game but struggled in the middle quarters.
“We are really playing with only one young guard currently and that is really tough when it comes to initiating an offense and moving the ball solidly up and down the floor,” coach Briana Weller said.
“Our senior and captain, Andrea Lara, is our other guard and she is still out due to a concussion.
“Our young girls and bench are really gaining a lot of experience by seeing a lot of playing time currently. These girls have come so far since the beginning of the season and have a bright future ahead of them.”
Eighth grader Katie Bailey had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Quilcene while sophomore Sammy Rae added 11 points and eight boards.
Also, freshman Alex Johnsen had nine points and two steals; freshman Megan Weller had seven points and five rebounds; freshman Jerrica Viloria had three points and three steals; and eighth grader Brooke Raynor came off the bench and scored two points and pulled down one rebound.
The Rangers next travel to Rainier Christian for a league game on Fridaynight.

SILVERDALE — A short-handed Redskins team won just two matches against the Eagles in Olympic League competition Tuesday night.
Klahowya won the four lowest weight classes by forfeit and seven matches overall by forfeit for an easy 42 points.
Port Townsend got six of those points back with a forfeit of its own at 195 pounds.
The other six points for the Redskins came at 182 pounds where Jack Pokorny of Port Townsend pinned Matt Salas in 4 minutes, 47 seconds.
