SPORTS: Crescent shocks Port Townsend in varsity volleyball; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — The Class 1B Crescent Loggers had a volleyball team first as the varsity squad beat the varsity 1A Port Townsend Redskins 3-2 in nonleague action Thursday night.

The Crescent JV, meanwhile, beat Port Townsend JV 3-0.

The Loggers varsity (5-0) won 17-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-9.

“This was a big step for us,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said.

“The speed of the game was different. The Lady Redskins really took it to us in the beginning but in Game 3 we finally caught up to their speed.”

The Loggers blew out to a 5-1 lead in Game 5 and dominated the rest of the way.

Sarah Moore had four kills in the match, two of which helped win Game 5 and the match. She also was 17 of 17 from the service line with two aces and a tip.

“[Our] girls have the potential to be a top team, but the will to want it more than other teams is our only problem,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Witheridge said.

“There has been more improvement on this team than any time I have ever seen, but . . . [we need] that little bit of fire to finish the match off.”

Crescent setter Racheal Bowen had 21 assists and was 12 of 12 serving with a tip.

Teammate Jandi Franz was tough at the net with nine kills and four blocks.

Freshman Shannon Williams had another strong match in the middle with four kills, six blocks, two tips and she was 9 of 12 serving with three aces.

Bonny Hazelett was 14 of 16 serving with two aces, two kills and two tips.

“Our libero, Kelly Belford, played outstanding defense for us,” Baker said.

Christine Unrue led the Redskins with 13 assists and five aces while Abby McGuire had 11 assists and two kills.

Enani Rubio had four kills while Gen Polizzi earned four aces for the Redskins.

The Loggers next play Shorewood Christian today while the Redskins play at Port Angeles on Tuesday.

Sequim 3, Klahowya 0

SILVERDALE — The Wolves improved to 4-1 overall by easily dispatching the Eagles 25-21, 25-8, 25-17.

Setter Taylor Balkan had 19 assists and she was 13 of 15 serving with eight aces.

“They didn’t like seeing her back there,” coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said.

Kyla Martin had 18 digs and four kills, and was 11 of 11 serving.

Rylleigh Zbaraschuk had nine digs while Hannah Hudson earned seven digs and had three perfect passes.

Haleigh Harrison, back from an automobile crash, had four kills.

The Wolves next play at the prestigious Mark Morris Tournament in Longview on Saturday. The tourney features some of the top teams in state.

Clallam Bay 3, Quilcene 0

QUILCENE — The Bruins held off a strong performance against the Rangers in nonleague action Thursday.

“Both teams played really well,” Clallam Bay coach Cheryl Erickson said.

“It was a fun game. Our girls really pulled together.”

The Bruins (3-2) won 25-14, 26-24, 25-18.

“It was a whole team effort for us,” Erickson said.

Melissa Willis had 100 percent serving in the match.

Clallam Bay next plays Shorewood Christian on Saturday.

Seattle Christian 3, Chimacum 2

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys had another five-game heartbreaker, losing another close Nisqually League match, falling to 0-4 in league and 1-5 overall.

Seattle Christian won 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 16-25, 15-6.

“I felt really good about the comeback but it was frustrating to lose the short game again,” coach Sally Dankert said.

“We had very good team play and our whole bench participated.”

Alyssa Gale had 13 kills and seven aces while Megan Dukek also had seven aces in the match for Chimacum.

The Cowboys next play at Charles Wright on Monday.

Montesano 3, Forks 0

MONTESANO — The Spartans fell in the SWL-Evergreen Division match Thursday night.

Montesano won 25-23, 25-12, 25-14.

Casey Williams had 11 kills for Forks while Jillian Raben earned 17 assists.

Girls Soccer

North Kitsap 3, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (3-1-3) gave up three goals in the first 21 minutes, then toughened up their defense, playing even wit the Olympic League leader the rest of the way.

Kearsten Cox and Karina Bohman were named defensive players of the match for the Riders while Kylee Jeffers was picked as transition player and Brittany McBride as selected as offensive player.

The Riders next host Lindbergh on Saturday.

Klahowya 6, Sequim 0

SILVERDALE — The Eagles’ firepower proved to be too much in a nonleague loss for the Wolves on Thursday night.

Sequim coach Molly McAleer named Makalaya Bentz the offensive player of the match in the loss, while Shelby Lott was the defensive player and Mauve Harris the transition player.

Sequim (1-5-0 overall) heads to Bremerton on Tuesday for its first Olympic League match of the season.

MONTESANO — The Spartans (0-4-0, 0-5-0) dropped their fourth straight SWL-Evergreen Division match to begin the season Thursday.

Forks head coach Andrew Peterson said Kaylea Kraft, Brooke Peterson and Sierra Noles all had exemplary efforts, but that wasn’t enough to beat a strong Bulldogs squad.

“The girls played better than they played all season,” Andrew Peterson said. “The score doesn’t show that, but they have a lot higher talent level than we have. I’m proud of the way my girls played.”

Forks next hosts 2B runner-up Napavine on Saturday in a nonleague match.

Girls Swimming

PT 104, Olympic 65

SILVERDALE — The Redskins continue their outstanding season, sinking the tough Trojans in an Olympic League meet Thursday and beating rival Port Angeles on Tuesday.

Port Townsend remains undefeated on the year at 3-0.

“It’s tough to have two intense meets in the same week this early in the season,” coach Anji Scalf said.

“A lot of my girls were still exhausted fro Tuesday.”

Overall, it was a great win, Scalf said.

Serena Vilage sparked the Redskins with two first places and two district times while Port Townsend ended up with 13 district-qualifying times overall.

Vilage was first in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.40 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.10.

Also taking first place with district qualifying times were Averi Richert in the 200 individual medley in 2:39.37 and Renada Walcome in the 50 free in 28.10 seconds.

Also taking first were the 200 medley relay team with Madison Braden, Vilage, Olivia Cremeans and Walcome, and the 200 free relay with Vilage, Richert, Raven Elias and Walcome.

“All in all, the girls are ready for a rest,” Scalf said. “We look forward to our meet with Sequim next week.”

Port Angeles 132, Klahowya 46

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (2-1) bounced back after their close loss to the Redskins on Tuesday to beat the Eagles going away at William Shore Memorial Pool.

Port Angeles earned five district qualifying times from Kelsey Macias in the 200-yard individual medley, Tracie Macias in the 50 freestyle and 500 free, Kelly Winn as the leadoff swimmer in the 400 free relay and Lexie Pankowski in the 100 backstroke.

Pankowski claimed second in her event while every one else took first.

The Riders swept four events, the 200 IM, 50 freem 100 free and diving, won by Allison Hodgin with 148.90 points.

The Riders next host Bainbridge on Tuesday in nonleague action.
