SPORTS: 2A Port Angeles falls to 4A South Kitsap; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Class 4A South Kitsap was a little too much for 2A Port Angeles in girls basketball nonleague action Tuesday night.

The Wolves, 7-1 on the year with just a one-point loss to Yelm as their only black mark, beat the Roughriders 55-42.

Port Angeles stayed with the talented Wolves most of the game, leading 9-6 after one quarter and trailing only 21-20 at halftime.

“We played a good 20 minutes but there was a 12-minute stretch that we did not compete well,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

“We had a real bad end of third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter.”

South Kitsap has two really good players, one who will be going to Division II Western Oregon University next year, Poindexter said.

“We held those players to a combined 25 points, which I feel good about,” he said.

Takes up slack

But a third player surprised the Riders with a game-high 17 points as the Wolves had three score in double figures.

Meile Keanu swished in 17 while Taylor Sunkel added 15 and Jackie Steiger scored 10.

“Kiah Jones did a good job defending Taylor,” Poindexter said.

And Mariah Frazier came off the bench to defend Sunkel well when Jones was on the bench resting, according to Poindexter.

“Defensively, we did an adequate job most of the time but we couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm against them.”

Kiah Jones led the Riders with 15 points while Paxton Rodocker dropped in nine.

Port Angeles next plays at Renton in nonleague action Jan. 4 and jumps back into Olympic League play against powerhouse Kingston on Jan. 6.
