PREPS: Chimacum baseball comes up clutch; Port Angeles softball slugs out important win

CHIMACUM — Cole Dotson threw a complete-game three-hitter and drove home the tying and winning runs as Chimacum beat out Klahowya for a district baseball playoff bye with a 3-2 win Friday in the season’s rubber match between the two Olympic League 1A squads.

Dotson also threw a three-hitter against the Eagles last week in the Cowboys’ 3-1 win.

“The entire team played pretty well,” Cowboys coach Bob Eldridge said. “The fact that we got behind 2-0 and came back. I’m pretty proud of them.”

The Cowboys committed two errors and spotted Klahowya two runs in the third inning, but came back in the home half to plate all three runs in the win.

Gavin Lawson singled with one out in the bottom of the third to get things in gear for Chimacum.

Issac Purser followed with a single and Henry Brebberman’s line drive to left field was misplayed, driving in Lawson and sending Purser to third and Brebberman to second.

Dotson then roped a line drive two-run single to right field to put the Cowboys up 3-2.

Dotson was stellar on the mound the rest of the way. He finished with 10 strikeouts while walking one and hitting a batter.

“Cole pitched really well,” Eldridge said. “We should have got out of the third inning without [giving up] any runs but we made an error and that will happen. Cole mixed everything up pretty well. He got into a groove. That was huge for us.”

Eldridge said he gives Dotson and catcher Jonah Diehl free range out on the field.

“I don’t call the pitches for him, he’s been a starter since he was a freshman and he’s got plenty of experience,” Eldridge said.

“The catcher [Diehl] will give him signals and he’ll shake him off if he doesn’t like that pitch. Cole throws a fastball, a curve and will throw a knuckleball every now and then that really fouls with [batters’] minds.”

Eldridge said his club had players fill in at a couple of spots in the win.

“We were missing a couple of starters, had to fill in at a couple spots. Clayton Smith our freshman came in and had to get under a long fly ball in center and Ben Preston, who normally plays right field, filled in at third base.”

“We hit the ball pretty hard yesterday. Isaac had two or three really hard hit balls, only one of them for a hit, but at least he’s hitting it hard.”

Chimacum (2-1, 7-8) will host Nisqually League foe Vashon to close out the regular season on Wednesday.

The Cowboys will open the playoffs against the Nisqually No. 2 at Curtis High School in University Place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.

Quilcene wins big

QUILCENE — Quilcene’s McKenzie Kieffer and Natalie Coffey each hit two-run home runs in the first inning, helping to stake the Rangers to a 14-1 lead in the first inning on their way to a monster doubleheader rout of Evergreen Lutheran.

The Rangers won Game 1 24-2 and Game 2 24-3 in Friday’s sweep, going to 5-0 in Sea-Tac 1B League play. Quilcene had 38 hits in the doubleheader.

Madison Coffey joined in the hit parade in Game 1, going 3 for 4 and scoring four runs, while Marissa Kieffer also drove in four runs.

“I think we can be a real good hitting team. Unfortunately we just haven’t faced good pitching this year so it’s still a question for me on where we are at offensively,” said coach Mark Thompson.

Kayla Ward pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out five while giving up one earned run. Defensively, after the first Eagle’s hitter reached on a two-base error, the Rangers settled down and made no mistakes.

“Everybody knows pitching and defense are the keys to success in this game. For us we have improved 500 percent in those areas from our first three games,” Thompson said.

In Game 2, Madison Coffey went 5 for 5, including two home runs, and drove in six runs to lead the Rangers. Marissa Kieffer went 4 for 4 with a double, a triple and four RBI, and Natalie Coffey continued her hot hitting, going 4 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Contributing to the Rangers’s huge day was lead-off hitter Brittney Beukes, who reached base all 10 plate appearances during the day’s doubleheader.

Beukes also pitched her first complete game of the year, striking out three while giving up no earned runs.

“Brittney is so important to our team in all facets of the game. She gets on base and scores runs, she pitches, and she makes plays in the field; definitely the glue that holds our team together,” Thompson said.

Quilcene (5-0, 8-3) next plays at Wishkah Valley on Tuesday.
