PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles gymnasts, Sequim’s Sharp earn wins at meet

POULSBO — Port Angeles gymnasts edged North Kitsap by just .65 of a point in a 139.85 to 139.2 meet victory over the Vikings at Breidablik Elementary on Wednesday.

Sequim’s Emma Sharp was first in the individual all around (total points acquired through the vault, beam, floor exercise and bars) with 32.2 points. Sharp won the vault with a score of 8.21, took second on the bars with a 6.5 and was fourth in the floor exercise (7.7) and beam (7.9)

The Wolves don’t have the minimum of five competitors to compete for team points, so Sequim’s gymnasts compete as individuals.

Cassidy Tamburro led the Roughriders with a second-place finish in the all around. Tamburro claimed the floor exercise with a score of 8.3, was second on the beam (8.4) and fifth on bars (5.5).

Cassandra Middlestead won two events for Port Angeles, posting an 8.6 on the beam and a 7.5 on the bars.

Sophomore Aiesha LaTourette finished seventh in the all-around for the Riders with a total of 26.9 points. LaTourette’s highest finish was sixth in the floor exercise (7.6).

Freshman Maizie Tucker placed fifth in the floor exercise (7.7) and eighth on the bars (5.3) for Port Angeles, while Devon Scribner was fifth on the beam for the Riders (7.4).

Port Angeles hosts its lone home meet of the season at Klahhane Gymnastics Center on Monday.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the gymnasts will march in at 11 a.m.

Boys Basketball Neah Bay 65, Clallam Bay 33

NEAH BAY — Keith Johnson Jr. scored 21 points, including knocking down 3 of 4 3-point attempts as the Red Devils outpaced their shorthanded rivals in a North Olympic League contest.

Johnson added three assists and five steals for Neah Bay.

Mike Shaw added 14 points and four rebounds for the Red Devils, while Sean Bitegeko scored six points with five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.

Jay Brunk also filled up the stat sheet for Neah Bay with a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three blocks, three steals, three assists and two points.

Ryan McCoy led all scorers with 28 points for Clallam Bay.

The Red Devils (2-0, 4-7) host Chief Kitsap on Saturday.

Clallam Bay (0-2, 1-8) played Crescent late Thursday and will host Neah Bay on Wednesday.

POULSBO — A second-quarter slump hurt the Loggers in a North Olympic League loss to the Bears.

“[The] second league game didn’t go very well for us,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said. “We got outrebounded almost three to one and CKA was able to get a multitude of shots at the rim and we weren’t able to keep them from converting.

“We seem to have one bad quarter per game and it was the second in this game. We sent them to the foul line continuously due to some silly fouls and they were able to capitalize”

Ferrier said the remainder of the game was pretty even and his team did some good things in spurts, but weren’t able to sustain the good for a full 32 minutes.

KC Spencer had 19 points to lead the Loggers. Kyle Buchanan added nine points and three rebounds.

“KC had a solid game,” Ferrier said. “Kyle Buchanan had an outstanding game for him as well.

“When we put it together we are going to be tough. Right now we are still searching for the right combinations.”

The Loggers (0-2, 5-7) played Clallam Bay late Thursday. They will host Chief Kitsap on Wednesday.

Girls Basketball Neah Bay 66, Clallam Bay 30

NEAH BAY – Red Devils Freshman Courtney Swan piled up the points and rebounds in a win over the rival Bruins, scoring 30 points and grabbing 20 rebounds, 10 offensive and 10 defensive.

Swan connected on 12 off 22 shots from the floor.

Neah Bay’s Gina McCaulley added 13 points, seven assists and seven steals and Lalia Greene narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. She added two assists and three steals.

Jada Clemmons led Clallam Bay with 12 points. Hannah Olson chipped in with six.

The Red Devils (2-0, 10-1) host Chief Kitsap on Saturday.

Clallam Bay (1-1, 3-4) played Crescent late Thursday and will trek to Longview to play Naselle in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Classic at Lower Columbia College at 11 a.m. Monday.

Quilcene drops pair

KIRKLAND — The Rangers dropped two contests this week, a 32-25 loss to the Sequim JV on Monday and a 44-27 defeat against Puget Sound Adventist on Wednesday.

“The Sequim JV simply outworked us,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said. “They moved the ball well, shot well, and got after the loose balls and outrebounded us defensively.

“[We] had too many turnovers with 21. Credit to the Wolves and their coaching staff. With the assist of the Competitive Hoops Program in PA, they are on their way to building a solid program in Sequim.”

Weller said her squad was led by Gina Brown, who posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Abby Weller scored seven, with five steals and three assists. Marissa Kieffer had four points and four rebounds and Sydney Brown scored four points with six boards and three steals.

Against Puget Sound Adventist, Quilcene’s ball handlers struggled against the Sharks’ full-court defensive pressure.

“Once again, our opponents had done their homework and swarmed Abby Weller. Our girls have yet to figure out that they have to run their routes on the press breaks and help Weller out. We need to start taking advantage of these aggressive trapping defenses and realize we have the numbers advantage in those situations. This is a work in progress for us.”

Weller was moved from guard to power forward and scored 16 points.

“Her versatility is remarkable. She will do anything to help out her team. Starting center, Gina Brown, fouled out early in the fourth quarter but did a good job for us in the rebounding department and also scored 5 points. Marissa Kieffer shot 100 percent from the foul line and added 4 points. Harmony Scholz played well and added a basket for [us].”

Quilcene (4-3, 5-7) hosts Pope John Paul II (1-5, 1-9) today.
