PORT ANGELES — The fall playoff season is moving into high gear this week, with several teams looking to go deep in the postseason in soccer, football and volleyball.
This is the first time since 2019 there has been a full playoffs slate for preps and community colleges.
Football
Postseason football begins Friday with Neah Bay hosting Mossyrock at Spartans Stadium in Forks at 6 p.m. Friday. Neah Bay (4-2) has the No. 1 seed out of the Northwest 1B League after shocking Lummi last weekend.
Forks (5-1) will play a 2B playoff game also at Spartans Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Spartans will play the winner of Adna versus Wahkiakum.
Port Angeles just missed out on qualifying for the postseason. They are the No. 13 seed in the West Central III District and an alternate as 12 teams qualified. If a team drops out, the Roughriders may get a chance to play in the postseason.
Instead, Port Angeles (3-6, 2-4 Olympic League) is set to play a final game at 6 p.m. Friday against North Mason (1-4, 1-4). This was a game canceled early in the season due to COVID-19 protocols.
East Jefferson (6-2, 5-0) is the Nisqually League champion. The Rivals play another regular-season nonconference game Tuesday at Sultan (3-5, 1-3) and will begin their postseason run Nov. 12 or 13 in the 1A West Central III district tournament.
Quilcene (7-1), champion of the SeaTac 1B League, is hosting Lummi (7-1), which beat the Rangers early in the season. The game is set to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, but there is no word yet if it will be played in Quilcene as there are problems with the Rangers’ field. Look for updates on the site of the game.
Crescent (3-3) goes on the road to play Naselle (6-1) in its 1B playoff opener at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Soccer
If you like soccer, you’ll love this week, as there are a ton of postseason games this week.
The Port Angeles girls soccer team (11-3-0), co-champions of the Olympic 2A League, begins its district playoff run at 7 p.m. tonight, hosting Enumclaw (11-3-1, 11-2-1 South Puget Sound League 2A League) at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Field.
Sequim (10-4-0), the third-place team in the Olympic 2A League, begins on the road at Fife at 7 p.m. tonight
This is a double-elimination tournament, so win or lose, Sequim and Port Angeles play again Thursday. If the Riders win, they are likely back at Peninsula College. The final games of the district tournament are Saturday.
The East Jefferson girls soccer team (6-5-3, 4-5-3 Nisqually League) plays at undefeated league champion Klahowya tonight in the second round of their district playoffs. Win or lose, they play again Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School against either Vashon or Bellevue Christian.
Forks (4-7-1, 4-5-0 Pacific 2B league), a No. 7 seed in the 1B/2B District 4 tournament, played No. 2 seed Kalama on Monday. That was a loser-out, winner-to-state match.
College soccer
The Peninsula College men and women both get a first-round bye in the NWAC soccer tournament.
The teams don’t know who they will play until Wednesday.
The women’s game will begin at noon with the men’s game at 2:15 p.m. at Wally Sigmar Field, and prep playoff games are possible in the late afternoon/early evening.
Both teams are undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the NWAC.
Volleyball
The second-place Sequim (10-5, 9-5 Olympic 2A League) volleyball team will host third-place Kingston (7-9, 7-7) at 6:30 p.m. today in the first round of the Olympic League 2A tournament. Sequim will play again Thursday either at North Kitsap or hosting Olympic. This tournament is for seeding in the West Central District III tournament, which begins Nov. 10.
After splitting a pair of matches to Stevenson and North Beach this weekend, Forks (11-4, 11-3 Pacific 2B League) plays against Onalaska (at Napavine) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the second round of the District 4 2B volleyball tournament.
Quilcene (14-4, 10-1 SeaTac 1B) played Evergreen Christian Monday in the 1B District 2 Volleyball Tournament. Win or lose, the Rangers play in the finals of the district tournament Wednesday at Evergreen Lutheran with three teams out of that tournament qualifying for state.
