PREP SOFTBALL, BASEBALL: Port Angeles girls bounce back after loss

Heidi Leitz two home runs in two days; PA baseball scores two runs late to earn rare tie

AUBURN — In a battle of Roughriders, The Port Angeles girls softball team got huge games from Heidi Leitz and Abby Kimball in an 9-6 win Saturday over Roosevelt in the first of two games played at Auburn Riverside High School.

Port Angeles banged out 17 hits in overcoming a 4-0 first-inning Roosevelt lead.

Leitz hit a home run for the second straight game. She also had a double and five RBIs to go with two runs scored. Kimball went 4-for-4 with a home and two RBIs. Kennedy Rognlien was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Lynzee Reid was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Sophia Ritchie and Mariah Traband also each had two hits with Traband driving in a run. Ava-Anne Sheahan had a double and two runs scored.

Reid and Leitz split the pitching duties which both girls going three innings. Leitz didn’t allow any runs, giving up just two hits while striking out four.

Port Angeles 8, Battle Ground 8

AUBURN — Like the Port Angeles baseball team, the Roughriders softball team earned a rare tie by scoring a late run.

The Riders’ game against Battle Ground was called after six innings with the score locked up 8-8. It will go down as a tie.

The Riders were up 7-3 entering the fifth inning, but Battle Ground rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, four of them coming on a grand slam, to take an 8-7 lead into the sixth.

In the sixth, the Riders loaded the bases on singles by Reid, Leitz and Rognlien. Kimball then hit a bases-loaded single to tie the game at 8-all. In the bottom of the sixth, Leitz allowed a single but was otherwise unscathed as she preserved the tie.

For the third straight game, Leitz hit a home run, while Kimball and Leitz also added home runs. Leitz went 3-for-3 with three runs scored an an RBI. Kimball also went 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Reid was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Kimball finished 7-for-7 in the Saturday doubleheader, while in her past three games, Leitz is 7-for-11 with three home runs and eight RBIs.

Lexie Smith hit a double and drove in a run, while newcomer Perry had a double, a stolen base and a run scored.

Friday’s Game

Liberty 8, Port Angeles 3

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles softball girls got off to a fast start against Liberty in the Roughriders’ home opener, but then the Liberty pitchers silenced the Riders bats the rest of the way in an 8-3 victory for the Patriots.

After Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Port Angeles got a first-inning home run from Leitz, driving in Reid, who had singled. The Riders extended their lead to 3-1 in the second when Morgan Politika had a two-base bunt followed by an RBI double to the outfield by Ritchie, but that was it for Port Angeles as the Roughriders were shut out the rest of the game as Liberty scored four in the fifth inning.

Leitz also hit a double and finished the game 2-for-4. Leitz pitched 4⅓ innings and allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking our four. Reid pitched 2⅔ and allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Port Angeles (3-1-1) has a busy four-day stretch with four games in four days. The Riders next play at Bainbridge (0-1) at 4 p.m. today in their Olympic League opener.
