PREP ROUNDUP: Wolves volleyball takes Bulldogs in five

SEQUIM — Sequim dominated a fifth set in a back-and-forth affair against North Mason, pulling out a tough 3-2 (25-19, 24-26, 25-17, 15-25, 15-3) volleyball match win that keeps the Wolves tied for second in the Olympic League 2A division.

“It was kind of like we woke up in that last game. We were kind of flat,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.

Webber-Heilman said that final game was tight until Annika Christensen served four straight points, then Kalli Wiker ended the match with eight points in a row.

Wiker ended up serving 24 for 24 with four aces.

Webber-Heilman described North Mason as a “scrappy unorthodox team” that liked to hit the ball deep. She said that in that fourth game, the Wolves were not playing well. “We couldn’t pass, nothing was going our way. It was nice we came out strong [in game 5],” Webber-Heilman said.

“We battled and luckily came out on the good side of it,” she said.

In addition to her serving prowess, Wiker had 14 assists and 15 digs.

Setter Brittney Gale served 15 for 16 with 23 assists and a team-high 26 digs. Webber-Heilman said this stat showed that the Bulldogs “were picking on our setter.”

Tayler Breckenridge, fighting a cold, served 10 for 12 with 23 kills, 16 digs and three blocks, while Jayla Julmist had a great match with eight blocks and eight kills. Bobbi Sparks had nine digs, while Isabelle Dennis served 12 for 13, had 13 perfect passes and 18 digs.

The win puts the Wolves at 4-1 in league (6-1 overall). Sequim has another likely tough match tonight at Kingston (4-1, 5-2) for sole possession of second place in the league.

Forks 3, Clallam Bay 2

CLALLAM BAY — The Spartans edged out the Bruins 25-8, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11 to earn some revenge for a loss to Clallam Bay earlier this month.

“We played good in the first game, came out strong,” Forks coach Jenn LeDuke said. “[We] relaxed too much after and had to come back and get back on top and take the win for the night. We were able to mix it up and have girls play different positions. [I’m] very proud of how hard all the teams worked last night.”

LeDuke said senior Britney Dean played really well in the middle for the Spartans.

“She also got the game-winning kill,” LeDuke said. “Julia Lausche served 100 percent with two aces. Chloe [Leverington] and Julia worked really well together running the quick sets in the middle. Myah Rondeau had an amazing dig playing libero. All around great team work.”

As expected, the view was different from the opposing bench.

“Our first game was awful on our part,” Bruins coach Amanda Maines said. We came out sleeping. Second and third games the girls came back on fire serving well, really talking and played great coverage. The 4th game was an upsetting game we had it and I am just going to not talk about it cause it makes me upset. Final game we just didn’t serve well and Forks outplayed us. It was a great battle all the way through — minus our first game.”

Clallam Bay (3-1) hosts Chief Kitsap today.

Forks (4-2) hosts league foe Tenino today.

Bremerton 3, Port Angeles 0

BREMERTON — The Roughriders lost on the road against the Knights 23-25, 21-25, 23-25.

Aeverie Politika led Port Angeles in serving, going 17 for 17 with one ace. Nacia Bohman seved 11 for 11 with three aces and Emi Halberg served nine for nine. Bohman had 14 assists while Camille Stensgard had 12. Emma Olsen led the team with 10 digs.

“We struggled … to find our energy and our consistency. Overall we didn’t communicate well as a team nor did we serve or hit consistent enough as a team. We gave the Knights too many points and beat ourselves tonight,” said coach Christine Grunch-Halberg.

Port Angeles (0-5, 0-6) hosts Olympic (1-4, 1-6) at 6:15 p.m. tonight.

Cross Country Archibald wins

OCEAN SHORES — Forks junior Madelyn Archibald won the girls 5,000 meter race at the Harriers at the Beach run at North Beach High School on Tuesday.

The Spartans finished third with 44 points. Ocosta and North Beach tied for the win with 38 points.

Girls soccer Port Angeles 1, Bremerton 0

BREMERTON — The Roughriders won a hard-fought 1-0 match against Bremerton on the road to stay within a game of league-leading Olympic.

Catie Brown scored the lone goal of the match in the 60th minute on an assist from Kyrsten McGuffey, who won the ball in the Knights’ penalty area, beat a defender and sent a crossing pass to Brown.

It was Brown’s second game-winning goal in three games and her third for the season.

“My goal was a team effort. Kyrsten set me up with a great pass and I knew I had to finish,” Brown said.

“Bremerton was greatly improved from last year and defended well throughout the game. They caused us some problems as we tried to earn a go ahead goal,” said coach Scott Moseley.

The Riders outshot the Knights 21-5. Their best chances came when Millie Long hit a driven shot off the post in the first half while Kiana Watson-Charles sent a 35-yard shot off the Knight’s crossbar midway through the second half.

It was the fifth Riders’ shutout of the season. The win leaves the Riders (4-1, 12 points) in third place in a very tough upper end of the the Olympic League 2A Division. North Kitsap is 4-1 with 13 points and Olympic is 5-0 with 14 points.

Port Angeles (6-2 overall) hosts Olympic Thursday night hosts league leader Olympic (8-1 overall) at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Civic Field in a match with first place on the line.

Chimacum 8, Port Townsend 1

CHIMACUM — Cowboys senior Grace Johnson netted a hat trick against the rival Redhawks and Elizabeth Schifflet added a pair of goals in Chimacum’s win.

Johnson’s younger sister Clare, a freshman, found the net for the Cowboys and sophomore defender Mia McNair added a goal.

“I really wanted the girls to focus on playing our game and not worrying about the rivalry and the emotion of it,” Chimacum coach Sarah Hanke said.

“We have been working on crossing and scoring off of a cross and we scored twice on crosses, so the girls showed they are taking what they have learned and are implementing it in a game.”

Hailey Haralson added a goal as well as Awstyn Sukert in the win.

“It was a great game for us because our underclassmen got to play,” Hanke said. “Megan Ejde our second goalkeeper got to play the whole second half and had two saves, so it was great to see everybody out there and building each other up.”

Chimacum (2-1-0, 4-4-0) visits league leading Klahowya (2-0-0, 7-1-0) today.

Boys Tennis Port Angeles 7, Kingston 0

KINGSTON — The Roughriders defeated Kingston 7-0 on the road without losing a single set, remaining all alone in second place in the Olympic League.

“We’re doing a good job right now of playing to our strengths and our experience really helps in the close matches,” said coach Brian Gundersen.

Wyatt Hall won his singles match 6-0, 6-0 and the doubles team of Kyler Tourbin-Brady Nickerson also won 6-0, 6-0.

The next couple of matches for the Riders are big. Port Angeles (7-2) hosted Sequim (6-2) on Wednesday, then plays at Bremerton (7-3) today.
