PREP ROUNDUP: Well-rounded Wolves soccer wins big; PA soccers earns first-ever win at Kingston

SEQUIM — Sequim was on the attack offensively from the early going in a 6-0 Olympic League boys soccer shutout of Bremerton on Friday.

“It was a good game and we played well,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said.

Freshman Kristian Mingoy scored his first varsity goal to get Sequim on the board in the sixth minute.

“A good combination play that started in the back from Ian Parker,” Brasher said. “He took it down and shot it over to Ryan Tolberd who left it to Mathys [Tanche] who found Kristian Mingoy for his first goal.”

Tolberd, who set Sequim’s single-season goal scoring mark as a sophomore with 21, added the next pair of goals for the Wolves.

“Twelve minutes in Ryan Tolberd scored on a nice shot from the right side assisted by Sean Weber,” Brasher said.

“At 35 minutes, just before halftime, Ryan got his second goal. He chased down a ball put down the left side by Angel Servin, the goalie came out and he chipped it over him.”

Tanche scored his fourth goal of the season in the 56th minute off an assist by Mike McAleer.

Adrian Funston and Aiden Henninger rounded out the goal-scorers for Sequim.

“Adrian Funston got tackled in the box and he scored on the penalty kick in the 60th minute,” Brasher said.

“And in the 69th minute, Aiden Henninger, another freshman, got his first goal.”

Navy Thomas-Brenske picked up the shutout in goal.

“He had a nice double save late in the 55th minute,” Brasher said. “Bremerton got a breakaway and he made the first save and followed up with the second. It was our only defensive lapse.”

Brandon Benson was Sequim’s pick as man of the match for his solid play in defense. Brasher also praised Weber and fellow center back Rudy Franco for their efforts in defense.

The Wolves (2-0-0, 2-0-1) have a busy week ahead. Sequim visits Olympic on Monday then hosts North Kitsap on Wednesday and Klahowya on Friday.

Port Angeles 4, Kingston 1

KINGSTON — The Roughriders picked up their first-ever win at Kingston, scoring three second-half goals to beat the Buccaneers 4-1.

Port Angeles entered the halftime break with a 1-0 lead on a goal from Andrew St. George. The play began on a cross from Luis Galvan to Stuart Methner. Methner back-heeled the ball to St. George to pick up the assist.

The Riders got a goal early in the second half in the 45th minute when Methner was fouled in the box. St. George converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead, his fourth goal of the season and second straight game with two goals.

Kingston responded with a goal to make it 2-1, regaining the momentum, but Port Angeles picked up an insurance goal on a pass from Andrew Methner to Stuart Methner, who shot the ball from the top of the penalty box past the goalkeeper to the far post.

The Riders added the fourth goal when Galvan took a pass from St. George, beating a defender for a shot past the goalkeeper.

St. George finished the match with two goals and an assist, while Stuart Methner had an assist and a goal.

“I think it was important for our team to get the win because it’s just the kind of spark we needed after the loss at home to Sequim. Beating Kingston for the first time in four years was exactly what we needed to come back into it,” St. George said.

Coach Chris Saari said Kaleb Baier had a good game at right back while keeper Anton Kathol made some big saves in goal and started the transition game with punts and throws. Saari named Stuart Methner his offensive player of the match, Kaleb Baier and Anton Kathol his defensive players of the match and St. George and Galvan his transition players of the match.

Port Angeles (1-1) next hosts Port Townsend (0-1) at 6:45 p.m. Monday.
