SEQUIM — Sequim played hard for a missing teammate and got back on the winning track in a 1-0 Olympic League boys soccer triumph over Kingston at home Tuesday.
“We dedicated the game to Adrian Mendez a teammate who has been in the hospital for several weeks,” coach Dave Breckenridge said. “I feel that gave the boys a little more energy to perform, which they did in the second half that resulted in a goal by Mehki Ashby.”
Mendez, 16, has been in Seattle Children’s hospital after he was airlifted from Olympic Medical Center on March 20, following the onset of sudden debilitating symptoms. He has been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune illness, Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.
A campaign to raise funds for Mendez and his family at www.gofundme.com/f/pruca-adrians-recovery had raised almost $25,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Breckenridge said the game with the Buccaneers was hard fought.
“It was a rough game. The boys had a hard time finding the right pass in the first half,” Breckenridge said. “The second half was a little better — decision making was better, execution was bad.
“We are still trying to figure out how to play together instead of individually. There were not many shots on target from either side which ended up with the result of 1-0 Sequim.
“We are working on utilizing multiple players in positions they don’t normally play. That unfortunately creates a bit of a disconnect, but changing things up is what I think we need. We have also been experimenting with different formations. Unfortunately, doing that in the middle of the season isn’t always a good idea. We are looking forward to getting back to a comfortable shape to take on the second half of the season.”
Sequim (2-4-0) visits North Mason on Friday.
Bremerton 5, Port Angeles 4
PORT ANGELES — Roughriders’ sophomore Matthew Miller notched four goals, but the Knights found the net in stoppage time to go home with the win.
Miller got going in the 15th minute, tying the game at 1-1.
“Matthew Miller collected a header from Kanyon Anderson (assist) and got in behind the Bremerton defense one-on-one with the goalie,” coach Chris Saari said. “Matthew got in behind the defender and smartly cut in front of him with the ball to seal him off. As the Bremerton goalie came out, Miller slipped the ball past him.”
Bremerton took advantage of a couple Port Angeles miscues for a 3-1 halftime lead. But Miller and Anderson connected on another scoring play right after halftime in the 44th minute.
“Anderson [with an assist] slipped a nice through ball in behind the defense to Matthew Miller, who beat the Bremerton goalie one-on-one,” Saari said.
Miller tied it at 3-all in the 49th minute when he stole a Bremerton back pass and shot past the goalkeeper.
The Knights regained the lead in the 54th, scoring when the ball deflected off a Riders’ defender and past Port Angeles goalkeeper Leif Moody.
Miller’s long-range free kick again tied the match in the 64th minute, but the Knights would have the final say.
Moody got a hand on Bremerton’s low shot to the near post but was unable to keep it from bouncing behind him and into the corner of the goal.
Saari named Miller the game’s offensive player of the match, with Anderson praised for his work in transition and Aurelio Wilson-Rojero for his defensive play.
Port Angeles (1-6-0, 2-7-0) visits Kingston on Friday.
Boys Golf Olympic 174, Port Angeles 177
BREMERTON — The Riders were edged in a close match at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
Cale Wentz led Port Angeles with a nine-hole round of 41.
Reid Schmidt added a 44 and Nate Anderson and Sky Gelder each posted rounds of 46.
Olympic’s Noah Shaw shot even-par 35 to earn match medalist honors.

BREMERTON — Lauryn Chapman was match medalist for the Riders with a 52 at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Claire Osterberg fired a 56, while Malena Marquez and Autumn Wilson-Rowland both shot 60.
Port Angeles (5-1) visits Sequim today.
