PREP ROUNDUP: PA soccer wins first league game; Sequim in first place after win

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles won its first Olympic League 2A Division boys soccer match, beating Bremerton 3-2 at Civic Field.

The Roughriders got a goal and an assist from Ben Schneider in Monday’s game. His assist came in the seventh minute when he took a long ball from Cameron Butler, then centered it to Andrew St. George, who booted it in for a goal.

In the 29th minute, Kenny Soule scored on a bicycle side volley to the far post on a cross from Andrew Methner to make it 2-0.

“It was one of the nicest goals scored by a Port Angeles player in recent history,” said coach Chris Saari.

The Knights were able to get back into the game in the 33rd minute, but Port Angeles regained a two-goal lead early in the second half.

Schneider scored after receiving a pass down the sideline from Methner. He then beat several Bremerton defenders and the goalie for a goal in the 45th minute. Methner picked up his second assist of the match with the goal.

The Riders held that lead for much of the second half and nearly gained a three-goal lead when Aldair Ramirez hit the cross bar on a long-range shot. The Knights made the Riders nervous at the end, scoring in the 77th minute on a penalty kick to make it 3-2.

“[We] had chances in the game to put the Knights away, but didn’t capitalize on some good scoring opportunities. That allowed the Knights to hang around and make it interesting at the end,” Saari said.

Port Angeles was able to hang on at the end to pick up the three league points. Saari named Schneider his offensive player of the match, Butler and Hollund Bailey his defensive players of the match and Methner, Soule and Michael Scott his transition players of the match.

The Riders outshot the Knights 12-11.

Port Angeles (1-1, 3-1) next plays Olympic (0-3, 0-5) on the road at 6:45 p.m. today.

Sequim 3, North Mason 0

BELFAIR — A pair of goals from Adrian Funston and a shutout from Navy Thomas-Brenske and Nick Janikic in goal helped the Wolves beat an improved Bulldogs team 3-0 on the road to remain undefeated on the season.

“I think this is a much improved team from the past few years. We did play pretty well,” said coach Dave Brasher.

Hayuk Minano scored Sequim’s first goal when he was hauled down in the penalty box for a penalty kick in the eighth minute, which he converted.

The score remained 1-0 at the half and well into the second half. The Wolves finally got some breathing room in the 53rd minute when Eli Gish made a cross to Minano, whose shot was blocked, but Funston booted in the rebound for a goal.

In the 60th minute Liam Harris made a pass to Ryan Tolberd, who was tackled on the play, and Funston was in position again, taking the pass and kicking the ball in for a goal. Harris picked up an assist on the play.

Thomas-Brenske was in goal for the first half while Janikic played keeper in the second. Brasher said the Sequim defense didn’t allow a single North Mason shot in the second half. The Wolves ended up outshooting the Bulldogs 16-5 for the game.

With the win, Sequim is tied for first with Kingston in the Olympic League 2A Division. The Wolves (2-0, 3-0-1) get a huge test on the road at 6:45 p.m. tonight against North Kitsap (2-1, 2-1)
