PREP ROUNDUP: Forks spikers fall in district tournament

Port Angeles and Sequim earn sweeps

FORKS — Forks went out fighting in a Class 2B Southwest District Volleyball Tournament quarterfinal loss to Napavine on Wednesday.

The young Spartans spikers scrapped with the senior-laden Tigers in the first two games but ultimately fell 25-22, 25-21, 25-10.

“Though it was a strange year due to COVID restrictions, it was an overall success for our young team — only having three seniors,” Forks coach Jenn LeDuke said. “Making it to the second round of playoffs in our first year in this new league is a huge stepping stone for our young team.”

Kyra Neel led the Spartans with 10 kills and added two assists and an ace.

“Kyra Neel had a great match last night, some hard kills and great saves all over the court,” LeDuke said.

Kadie Wood chipped in with two kills and two aces.

“Kadie Wood was all over the floor, saving rallies and digging some hard balls,” LeDuke said.

Kray Horton was perfect on serves with two aces.

“Kray Horton stayed strong with her serving last night with 100 percent [accuracy],” LeDuke said. “She did get hurt early in the second set, rolling her ankle, and that took her out of the match. LillyAnn Crowell did well stepping in for senior Kray.”

Freshman Kaidence Rigby posted seven kills, an ace and an assist.

“Kaidence Rigby played tough at the net last night and all season long,” LeDuke said. “She had a great first year as a freshman.”

Kesia Rowley dished out 17 assists and had two kills and an ace.

“Kesia stepped in as our setter the last two matches and really did amazing,” LeDuke said. “She also has a tough serve.

“Colbie Rancourt stayed sharp with her serving. She has been one of our ace servers. Elizabeth Soto also came off the bench for Colbie and did a great job passing, getting us a side out.”

Forks finished with a 6-4 record and will graduate Horton, Rowley and Rancourt.

“Thank you to all that worked so hard for these kids to have a season,” LeDuke said.

Port Angeles 3, Klahowya 0

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders wrapped their season with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-14 sweep of the Eagles.

“It was another team win for us,” Port Angeles coach Jennifer Reynolds said. “It has been such a gift to play this season and watch our systems come together. We had near-perfect serving and executed our defense in spectacular fashion. The team communicated well to cover gaps and respond to our opponent’s attacks. The transition to offense was seamless, even when we were out of system.”

Senior setter Camille Stensgard led the Riders with 19 assists, served 16 of 16 with an ace and added three kills and five digs.

Junior Emi Halberg posted 13 kills, six digs and served 100 percent.

Senior Savannah Bray served 10 for 11 with three aces and six digs.

Sophomore Lily Halberg served 12 for 12 with three aces and also had six digs.

Jaida Wood added eight kills for Port Angeles at middle hitter, and Zoe Smithson was 9 of 10 on serves with three aces. Smithson also had 14 assists, eight digs and six kills.

Junior Kennedy Bruch added four digs, served 15 of 16 with one ace while senior libero Emma Olsen had 100 percent serving plus four digs.

Sam Robbins and Bruch each had 3.0 passing on serve receive, and Robbins also had five kills.

Port Angeles finished with a 6-4 overall record, 6-3 in Olympic League North Division play.

Sequim 4, Olympic 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves swept the Trojans 25-14, 25-15, 25-7 and, in an extra game, 25-16.

“We served 90 percent as a team with 21 aces,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said. “We had 24 aces against Bremerton [in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-18, 25-17 win Monday], so we have been keeping the serving trend going.”

Kalli Wiker led the way, serving 24 of 25 with seven aces and adding 26 assists and two stuff blocks.

“Kalli had a 10-point serving run in the first game, including four of her aces,” Webber Heilman said. “She’s really proud of her stuff blocks because she’s not one of our taller players.”

Amanda Weller opened the match with a seven-point serving run, including four aces. She also added four kills. Kendall Hastings served 8 for 9 with three aces and led Sequim with 17 kills.

“In the third game, she had six kills with no hitting errors,” Webber Heilman said.

McKenna Hastings was a perfect 7 of 7 on serves with four perfect passes, two aces and four digs.

Webber Heilman said the teams held a moment of silence for three Bainbridge High School students killed in a rollover collision Tuesday. The teens were members of Olympic Premier Volleyball Club, which includes players from Sequim and Olympic.

Sequim (9-2, 9-3) will close out its season with a match against Central Kitsap on Saturday.

Anacortes 45, East Jefferson 0

ANACORTES — East Jefferson lost a road game to the Seahawks played on short notice Wednesday.

“We picked it up on Monday,” coach Patrick Gaffney said of the game.

“We turned the ball over too much and had too many penalties. And the penalties came in succession, which made things harder.”

East Jefferson (0-4) will host Cascade Christian (2-1) on Saturday in their season finale.

“We are going to play at home with the JV at 1 p.m. and the varsity at 3 p.m.,” Gaffney said.

The game is not open to the public, but players will be allowed to invite a couple of spectators to attend the game.
