PREP ROUNDUP: Area gymnasts place at WOWI; Pair of PA grapplers win at Island Invite

AUBURN — The Port Angeles gymnastics team competed at the Washington Open Winter Invitational at Auburn Mountainview High School, with several local gymnasts placing.

Sequim junior Lesae Pfeffer had the best showing, coming in second in the Bars State Level with a sore of 4.2. Sequim freshman Ellie Turner came in third with a 4.1 and Port Angeles’ Lisi Hanson eighth with a 4.0.

Pfeffer also came in third in the Vault Sectional Level with a score of 7.6. Port Angeles’ Brooklynne Jacobs came in eighth with a 6.9 and Sequim’s Danica Pierson ninth with a 6.8.

In the Vault Olympic Level, Port Angeles’ Aiesha LaTourette came in sixth with an 8.4.

In the Bars Sectional Level, freshman Mei Ying Harper-Smith came in fourth with a 6.2, while Pierson came in ninth with a 5.2.

In the Beam Olympic Level, Pfeffer finished ninth with an 8.2 and in the Floor State Level, Hanson finished 10th with a 5.6.

There were no team scores or all-around at the meet. Competitors are divided into skill levels, so girls only compete against other girls of similar ability.

Port Angeles’ team is a mix of Port Angeles, Sequim and Crescent gymnasts.

The team’s next competition will be a home meet at Klahhane Gymnastics Center at 11 a.m. Monday. Kingston, North Kitsap and North Thurston will compete against Port Angeles’ combined team.

Boys wrestling Port Angeles at Island Invitational

BAINBRIDGE — The Port Angeles wrestling team had two individual champions at the Island Invitational meet this weekend.

Riley Gale won his weight division at 170 pounds, while Jason Kibe Jr. took the championship at 182 pounds.

Grant Abrams also took third at 160 pounds, while Corey Young (145), Jackson Larson (152) and Leslie Worthey (285) all took fourth.

The Riders (4-0 in league), will wrestle at Sequim (0-3) at 7 p.m. looking to stay undefeated in Olympic League 2A Division action. They will wrestle at the King of the Hills/Battle for the Belts meet at Black Hills High School in Tumwater on Saturday.

After that, the Riders will host unbeaten Olympic on Jan. 24 with the league championship likely on the line.
