PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Rider girls come up short against No. 4-ranked Washougal

WASHOUGAL — The Port Angeles basketball girls showed they can compete among the top teams in the state, falling on the road to No. 4-ranked Washougal by a respectable margin of 64-50.

The Roughriders actually played even with the Panthers, a 13-2 team, in three out of the four quarters. But it was one rough period — the second — that cost the Riders as they were outscored 21-11.

“We started the game well, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. As the first half progressed, Washougal’s defensive pressure forced us to play a faster pace than we wanted. In the second quarter, we rushed passes and had less than ideal shooting form. Our misses and turnovers became easy transition baskets for the Panthers,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

“Our third quarter was much better, probably one of the better quarters we have had all season. We cut the Washougal lead to six points several times, but we ultimately could not score enough on our inside attempts nor stop Washougal’s inside scoring,” he said.

Poindexter also said the Panthers’ size advantage hurt the Riders. Washougal has six players listed at 5-foot-10 or taller.

“Skylar Bea was the most effective shot blocker we’ve faced this year,” Poindexter said.

Poindexter said the Riders did a good job getting to the line, making two-thirds of their free-throw attempts and made three out of four 3-pointers.

“Overall, it will prove to be a valuable learning experience as we head into postseason,” he said.

Leading the Riders was Millie Long with 15 points. Eve Burke had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jaida Wood 10 points. Washougal was led by Jaiden Bea with 20.

Port Angeles (8-0, 12-4) returns to league play at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a game at North Mason (4-5, 7-8).

TOLEDO — The Forks girls got off to a hot start against Toledo but couldn’t fend off the Indians down the stretch as Toledo pulled out a 68-63 win over the Spartans.

Forks scored 24 points in the first quarter in Saturday’s game with Rian Peters scoring 12 in the first eight minutes.

“Rian had such a great game. Twelve in the first quarter really set the tone,” said coach David Hurn.

“We had 29 points all game against Tenino [on Thursday] and then score 24 in the first quarter,” Hurn said.

Hurn said he was pleased with how the Spartans responded against a very good Toledo team — the Indians are 14-2 on the season — after their tough league loss Thursday to Tenino.

“I was really proud of how they responded and showed up. The game came down to the wire,” he said. “It just shows what we can do.”

Peters led the Spartans with 18 points, while Kadie Wood had 12, Chloe Leverington 10 and Kesia Rowley nine.

Forks (1-4, 6-9) will next play at Klahowya (4-0, 10-6) on Wednesday.

Boys Basketball Coupeville 79, Port Townsend 66

COUPEVILLE — Port Townsend got a great performance from Noa Montoya and hung with Coupeville for most of the game, but fell in the end 79-66.

Both teams shot well, hitting a total of 21 3-pointers. The Redhawks hit 10 from beyond the arc while Coupeville hit 11.

Coach Tom Webster said the Redhawks at one point in the second half scored 13 straight points and took a 53-51 lead, but the Wolves hit their shots and free throws down the stretch to fend off Port Townsend.

Montoya scored 27 points, 18 of them coming in the first quarter. He shot 3 for 3 on his treys and 5 for 5 on his free throws in the first quarter.

Montoya also added 12 rebounds. Skyler Zabransky had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

“That was his best game of varsity so far,” Webster said.

Aiden Petta also had a good game with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Redhawks also lost Thursday to Klahowya 74-45. Montoya led Port Townsend with 17 points, while Petta had nine.

In this game, the Eagles got up 26-8 after the first quarter and Port Townsend was never able to climb back into it.

“We got punched in the mouth early and could never answer the bell,” Webster said.

Port Townsend (1-2, 3-11) plays Chimacum (0-3, 1-13) at 7:30 p.m. today in an Olympic League 1A Division game.
