SEATTLE — The East Jefferson girls basketball team got a monster game from Penina Vailolo in winning its second straight game Friday 58-44 over University Prep.
Vailolo scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, 11 of them on the offensive boards. She shot 12-for-23 from the floor.
The Rivals entered the second quarter behind 15-14, but they seized control of the game with an 11-3 second quarter, then erupted for 23 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 48-27 lead into the fourth. Vailolo scored 12 of her points in that third quarter and finished with 18 for the half.
Kaydence Plotner added 14 points and six rebounds, while Dylin Shockley had nine points and Kay Botkin seven points and five assists. Teri Wiley had five steals and four assists.
The Rivals (0-1, 3-6) return to Nisqually League action with a game in Silverdale against Klahowya (1-0, 3-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

MOUNT VERNON — The two-time defending state champion Neah Bay girls basketball team remained undefeated with wins this weekend over Mount Vernon Christian and Forks at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.
The Red Devils beat MVC 51-36 on Saturday. The Hurricanes are a familiar foe that Neah Bay has repeatedly faced in the postseason in both district and state tournaments.
Qwaapeys Greene had a monster game, scoring 35 points on 11-for-19 shooting. She also shot 10-for-13 on her free throws. Cerise Moss added eight points and six rebounds.
Against Forks on Friday, Neah Bay got off to a fast start in the first quarter and never looked back in a 60-31 win.
The Red Devils scored 24 points in the first quarter in Friday’s win. They were led by Moss, who hit four 3-pointers and scored 20. Greene had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Wiinuk Martin had six points and eight rebounds.
Forks was led by Fynlie Peters, who had seven points. Bailey Johnson scored six, and Brooklynn Rondeau five.

Central Kitsap 54, Port Angeles 40
BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls basketball team was hurt by a rough second and third quarters in a 54-40 road loss Friday against 3A Central Kitsap.
Central Kitsap outscored the Roughriders 40-14 in the second and third quarters.
“Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter against good defensive efforts,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “The second and third quarters were disastrous for us due to our 16 turnovers in those quarters, several of which were converted into quick lay-ins by Central Kitsap — they scored 14 points directly off of our open-court turnovers in the game; we scored only four points directly off theirs.”
The Riders were led by Lindsay Smith, who scored 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Teanna Clark scored nine points to go along with five steals and four assists.
“We played much more effectively in the fourth quarter, taking care of the ball, making better offensive decisions and finishing better on inside shots, and playing more aggressive defense,” Poindexter said. “Lindsay Smith had 11 of her 19 points in the final quarter, and Teanna Clark had 6 of her 9 points in that quarter.”
Port Angeles (1-2, 4-5) returns to Olympic League play at home at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday with a game against Sequim (1-2, 2-5).

MOUNT VERNON — The Forks girls basketball team got a huge game from Bailey Johnson, but the Spartans were hurt by too many turnovers in a 54-50 loss against Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) in the finale of the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.
Johnson scored 24 points to go with five assists and seven steals.
“And she did that in basically two-and-a-half quarters because of foul trouble,” said coach David Hurn. “We need her on the court more.”
Chloe Gaydeski also scored 10. Hurn said the difference in a close game was turnovers.
“We’re really struggling to control the basketball, and that starts in practice. It’s really holding us back and we need to fix it and fix it right away,” Hurn said.
Forks also beat Pateros 58-45 on Thursday at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.
The Spartans (3-7) go right back on the court at 7 p.m. today for their Pacific 2B League opener against Ilwaco.
