PORT TOWNSEND — There are two local 1B football powerhouses still alive in the postseason after last week’s action.
Quilcene clobbered Oakville 52-0 on Friday night at Port Townsend Memorial Field in its Class 1B Quad-District winner-to-state game.
The Rangers (9-1 overall, No. 10 in Ratings Percentage Index) now move on to the first round of state as a No. 9 seed and will play DeSales (8-1 overall, No. 7 RPI), a private Catholic school out of Walla Walla. This is a team Neah Bay has played in recent years. This game will be played at noon Saturday at DeSales. Based on won-loss records, seeding and RPI, this appears to be an evenly matched game of two very good teams.
Quilcene got there largely with defense as the Rangers’ offensive stats for the game were relatively modest. Eight players combined to rush for 177 yards and quarterback Andrew Perez-Lopez passed for 89 yards.
But the Rangers’ defensive stats were stellar with 10 tackles for losses. Mason Iverson led the way with four quarterback sacks, five tackles for losses and nine tackles total. Tyler Wills caused two fumbles and Perez-Lopez recovered two fumbles.
Offensively, Robert Evans ran for 52 yards and scored three touchdowns, including a 55-yard touchdown pass from Perez-Lopez.
Neah Bay, bye
NEAH BAY — The Red Devils (9-1 overall) as the Northwest 1B League champion, got a district playoff bye. They go into the state round of playoffs as a No. 5 seed, a bit of a low seed for the No. 3 RPI team in the state. Neah Bay will host No. 12 seed Wahkiakum (8-3, No. 14 RPI). This is a new 1B team Neah Bay played earlier this season, handling the Mules easily 78-24.
The game will be played at 6 p.m. Friday at Spartan Stadium in Forks.
Neah Bay has battled some injuries this season but has most of its star players back such as Jodell Wimberly, Tyler Swan and Makyah Chambers.
Crescent 48, North Beach 14
FORKS — Though not a playoff game, the Crescent Loggers finished their season on a high note, crushing North Beach in forks 48-14 on Friday night to raise their record to .500 (5-5).
The Loggers got 312 yards rushing from senior Dom Sprague, playing in his last game for Crescent. Sprague ran the ball 31 times and had touchdown runs of 25, 8 and 16 yards. He also had 25 tackles on defense (15 assisted and 10 solo), a quarterback sack, a fumble recovery and deflected a pass.
In all, the Loggers totaled more than 500 yards of offense. In addition to Sprague’s big day, Mikah Love had a 65-yard run and caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Josh Berson ran four times for 43 yards. Henry Bourm passed 6-for-11 for 95 yards and threw three touchdowns, and Levi Bourm had two catches, both of them touchdowns, for 28 yards.
Crescent added the game against North Beach in Forks because it didn’t make the postseason as the fifth-place team in the top-heavy Northwest 1B League.
Toledo 62, Forks 20
KELSO — Flashes of Forks’ football future were on display as the Spartans hung tough with No. 4 Toledo (9-1) for a half before fading in a 63-20 winner-to-state Class 2B District 4 Crossover playoff.
The Spartans spotted Toledo a pair of scores to open the game, but roared back to cut the lead to 14-13 late in the first half after a rushing touchdown by sophomore Kaden Ward and the first of two touchdown passes to Gage Willenbrink.
Toledo had answers, going up 21-13 with about four minutes left until the break, and capitalizing after allowing a big gain on the ground by Forks quarterback Bubba Hernandez-Stansbury.
Hernandez-Stansbury broke off a 45-yard scamper, but the Spartans suffered a pair of sacks and were forced to punt, setting up a quick Toledo score and a 28-13 halftime score.
Hernandez-Stansbury com-pleted 13-of-25 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns, one a 66-yarder to Willenbrink and the other on a long score to Willenbrink according to Forks coach Trevor Highfield.
Toledo broke open the game completely early in the third quarter when the Riverhawks blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown.
W.F. West 56, Sequim 3
CHEHALIS — Going up against a powerful 9-1 team in W.F. West, the Sequim Wolves lost 56-3 in their district playoff matchup.
The Wolves finish the season at 5-5, their first .500 season in three years.
W.F. West got up 28-0 after one quarter and 56-0 by the half. W.F. West’s Gage Brumfield, who is a verbal commit to play for Eastern Washington University, passed 16-for-20 for 225 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for 74 yards, all in the first half.
Sequim got a 37-yard field goal in the second half from Andrew Keeler.
