QUILCENE — Quilcene evened the score against Clallam Bay with a 45-30 nonleague girls basketball victory at home Monday.

“[We] got it done today against the Lady Bruins and made up for last week’s [47-44] loss at Clallam Bay,” Rangers coach Briana Weller said.

“We are coming off two solid performances in the past three days. [I give] credit to Clallam Bay as they are a very scrappy and physical team.”

Madi Coffey led Quilcene with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

“Madi Coffey had an absolute lights-out game offensively and defensively,” Weller said.

“She had her first high school double-double. She has a huge motor and backs down from nobody. She also had four steals.”

Weller also praised Katie Love, who put up eight points, grabbed six rebounds and swiped five steals.

Allison Jones added 14 points and a pair of steals for the Rangers (0-1, 3-3).

The loss snapped Clallam Bay’s (6-1) six-game season-opening winning streak.

“I think we are a tired basketball team,” Bruins coach Michael Maines said.

“We’ve had three games in four days and I think we lacked our usual energy, our usual spark. But no excuses, they beat us.”

Mariah LaChester led Clallam Bay with 13 points and Atokena Abe added seven points.

“They outrebounded us pretty well,” Maines said. “We didn’t get too many second chances [offensively].”

Quilcene had a good game from the free throw line, hitting 15 of 21 attempts.

“Our free throw shooting was solid tonight as well,” Weller said.

“We were able to do a much better job of utilizing our dribble drive attacks and we got rewarded for our efforts.”

Maines said it was a physical game.

“There were a lot of fouls and jump ball tieup calls,” Maines said.

“It went both ways, but it was a real, real physical game.”

Quilcene visits Crescent on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Neah Bay ran out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Gina McCaulley also added seven points and Vonte Aguirre six.

Coach Tony McCaulley said Neah Bay was a little shorthanded, and that the team, “still didn’t play as well as we wanted to.”

Neah Bay (4-0) gets a break for a week and next plays Nooksack Valley at the Crush in the Slush Tournament at Port Townsend on Dec. 29.

McCaulley said in general he’s happy with the girls getting off to a 4-0 start. The team is playing solid defense.

“We still have to work on some stuff,” he said.

BELFAIR — The Cowboys got off to a good start against the Bulldogs, taking a 17-10 lead into the halftime break, but fell on the road 38-36, then held on for a tight finish down the stretch in a 38-36 win.

Coach Trevor Huntingford calls his players “cardiac kids” for their tendency to get in a lot of close games.

“We pushed out to an early lead and felt very good with our overall performance in the first half. In the second half, North Mason changed their defense a bit and put a little better pressure on us. It got pretty physical with them pushing us around the floor which I think we can do a little better job with, but we managed to make plays again when it really counted,” Huntingford said.

Huntingford said the Yaley sisters, Grace and Alice, had their best game of the year, combining for 25 points.

Chimacum (5-3, 1-2) next plays Vashon on Dec. 28 at the Blaine Holiday Invitational.

PULLMAN —The Roughriders fell on the road when Pullman’s Carolena Sears sank a jumper with 23 seconds to play.

“Pullman hit the go-ahead basket with 12 seconds left to go up 40-39,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said of Monday’s game.

“We didn’t score on the next possession, had to foul, and they hit both free throws. We had 12 seconds left and got a decent 3-point attempt up that missed.”

Cheyenne Wheeler scored 15 to lead the Riders. Gracie Long added nine points and Lauren Lunt had five.

“Our 5 of 16 free throw shooting, combined with a couple of stretches where we turned the ball over on four or five consecutive possessions, prevented us from getting the win,” Poindexter said.

PORT TOWNSEND — Berkley Hill shook off a cold night from the floor with two clutch 3-point shots in overtime, the second to take the lead for good with 15 seconds to play, as the Redhawks winged the Falcons in a nonleague game.

“We defended it out and they really didn’t get a chance to put up much of a look [at a game-winner,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said of South Whidbey’s final offensive possession.

Detrius Kelsall had a monster game for Port Townsend, leading all scorers with 35 points.

“He had an amazing game,” Webster said.

“Deet spread his scoring out and had eight in the first, 10 in the second and third and seven in the fourth.

“He also guarded their best player, a real legit guy, and just had an awesome game all-around.”

Hill finished with 11 points. Kaiden Parcher added eight points and Jacob Boucher scored six.

“Kaiden did a good job down low and Jacob ran the offense well,” Webster said. “We ran a lot of sets offensively and got a lot of good looks [at the basket.”

Port Townsend (2-0, 4-1) hosts Vashon (2-1) in a nonleague game Thursday.

PULLMAN — The Roughriders lost after their longest road trip of the season to Pullman 65-51.

“Pullman is exactly what we thought they were,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said. “A physical, athletic team and we had to figure out how we could play with them.”

The Riders trailed 32-24 at halftime and cut the deficit to 36-34 early in the third quarter.

“Grayson [Peet] hit a three, Kyle [Benedict] hit a three and we cut it to a two-point game,” Ulin said.

“Then we took our foot off the gas a little and they went on a big run, a 12-2 run, to take control. And that’s what good teams do. They took advantage of every mistake we made.”

Garrett Edwards, who appears to be getting better each game, had his best scoring game of the year with 17 points for Port Angeles.

“Garrett came off the bench for us and played really well,” Ulin said.

Liam Clark also did well, scoring nine points, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking a few shots.

“Their post is a 6-5, 220-pound senior and Liam battled him all game long,” Ulin said.

The Riders (2-1, 4-3) host Centralia (3-2), a team boasting one of the state’s highest scorers in Hodges Bailey, today at 3 p.m.

CHIMACUM — The Chimacum boys had their second game in three days that went to overtime, but this time they fell just short to North Mason 63-61 in a nonleague game.

“Our guys played their hearts out and we had our best game as a team this season. We came out fast and were able to stick to the game plan. In the end, we had opportunities to win and that’s really all you can ask for as a coach,” said coach Justin Bento.

“Considering we lost to North Mason by 27 points earlier this year, I am very proud of the progress we have made so far,” Bento said.

On Friday, Chimacum (2-6) beat Klahowya 52-51 in overtime.
