PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Chimacum boys, Port Townsend girls win Quimper Quarrel contests

CHIMACUM — Chimacum withstood Port Townsend’s second-half rally and gave the Redhawks their first Olympic League 1A defeat in a 58-56 rivalry win.

The game evened the season series at one win apiece, and sets up a showdown for the Widge Black Memorial Trophy at Port Townsend at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

“It was a good win for us, a close game, a great crowd and a good atmosphere,” Cowboys coach Jim Eldridge said of

Friday’s game.

Chimacum built a nine-point lead, 32-23 at halftime.

The Cowboys were led by 22 points from Matt Koenig.

“Their goal was to shut James Porter down,” Eldridge said.

“He’s been our leading scorer. They did a good job on him. He had six points, but that let Matt get going.”

But Port Townsend rallied to tie the game at 41-all early in the fourth quarter.

Kelsall led Port Townsend with 20 points.

“We played a 2-3 zone most of the night and they shot the ball well, hit 10 3s against us,” Eldridge said.

“They made some good adjustments, kind of stifled our offense, and took the lead by two when [Kaiden] Parcher hit a couple free throws to go up 51-49 with about 3 minutes left.”

It was the Redhawks’ only lead of the game.

Chimacum scored six straight points to go up 55-51 in the final minute.

A Port Townsend basket cut the lead to 56-53 with 10 seconds left before Koenig sealed the game with two foul shots.

A late trey by Jacob Ralls provided the final margin.

“We really did a great job of hitting our free throws down the stretch,” Eldridge said.

The Cowboys (4-2, 6-11) are now a game up on Coupeville (3-3, 8-8) for the league’s second playoff berth with three league games left.

The Cowboys host Klahowya (0-5, 1-16) on Tuesday.

Port Townsend (5-1, 7-10) visits Coupeville on Tuesday.

FORKS — The Grizzlies used a huge first half to maul the Spartans.

“We absolutely got smacked,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said of Friday’s game.

“They almost got up by 20 points in the first quarter alone. We came out slow, we came out real lethargic.”

Jerod Steen was a big part of Hoquiam’s first-half.

He scored all of his game-high 20 points in the two opening quarters.

“He got on us big time,” Gooding said.

“Every part of the game . . . they outhustled us on loose balls, played good on-ball defense, we didn’t block out. No excuses, they just flat outplayed us.”

Parker Browning led the Spartans with 19 points and Marky Adams added 14.

Forks (4-9, 6-13) wraps its regular season schedule at home against Montesano on Tuesday.

The Spartans are a game up on Elma (3-9, 5-13) and Tenino (3-9, 5-11) in the race for the Evergreen League’s fourth district playoff berth.

Forks swept the season series against the Eagles and was swept by the Beavers.

Those two teams play each other Tuesday.

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys’ late charge wasn’t enough to get past the Redhawks in a Quimper Quarrel rivalry contest.

Friday’s win was Port Townsend’s second victory in two tries against Chimacum, and earned the Redhawks possession of the Janelle Perillo Memorial traveling trophy for the season.

The two teams also will face off Saturday at 7 p.m. in Port Townsend.

“PT got a little space on us and lead by about five [points] or so at half,” Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford said.

“They extended it out to 10 or 12 in the third quarter and we got back in it when we started pressing in the fourth.

“We came back and got down a point or two, but we missed some free throws with the opportunity to tie the game in the final minute.”

Huntingford said it was a super-competitive, physical “classic, rivalry game.”

“We did a good job holding Kaitlyn Meek in check, but their size hurt us. They got some in-close buckets, and we had a tough time guarding them down low.

“I think they got about 20 points from Jazmine [ Apker-Montoya]. She got inside for a lot of points and rebounds.”

The win, and Klahowya’s loss to Coupeville, puts the Redhawks (3-3, 6-10) in second place in Olympic League 1A play.

Chimacum is fourth (1-5, 4-13) and needs to beat Klahowya (2-4, 3-13) to move into the league’s final playoff position when it hosts the Eagles on Tuesday.
