PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys basketball team missed an opportunity to improve its postseason chances in a 61-48 home loss to the Bremerton Knights.
The Roughriders entered Monday’s game in what appeared to be a four-team fight with Bremerton, North Mason (1-3, 5-6) and Kingston for the Olympic League 2A’s fourth and fifth district tournament berths.
With the win and Sequim’s loss to North Kitsap on Monday, the Knights (3-2, 5-5) moved into third place in the league behind Olympic and North Kitsap.
That means the Riders (1-4, 4-9) are now in a three-team battle for the league’s fifth and final district berth.
They have another chance to gain an advantage tonight when they host Kingston (0-4, 4-7) at 7 p.m.
“We have to have a sense of urgency,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said of tonight’s game.
“This is not a win-or-go-home game, but one of our goals is to make the district playoffs, and in order to qualify we need to be in the top five of our league.
“That would make this game extremely important.”
Port Angeles led most of the first half of Monday’s game, but Bremerton’s 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining tied the game at 25-25 going into halftime.
“We played relatively sharp for the first two quarters. We defended well, we limited our turnovers and we did not give up any transition points,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.
“That changed in the second half. We had some careless, unnecessary turnovers, which led to fast break points.”
The Knights outscored the Riders 21-12 in the third quarter and 38-25 in the second half.
“To win basketball games, you need to win the turnover margin, out-rebound your opponent and hold them to a lower shooting percentage,” Ulin said.
“If you do those three things, you are going to be successful. Right now, we struggle at times in each one of those categories.
“I love how hard we play and how we fight, but to win these type of ball games we need to have better composure and execution.”
Senior Hunter Hathaway led all scorers with 21 points, making 10 of 12 attempts from the field, and 13 rebounds.
“Hunter Hathaway had a great game,” Ulin said. “I can’t say enough on how hard he plays and efficient he is.”
Nathan Angevine added 11 points for the Riders and Lambros Rogers scored 10.
Tavontay Carter paced Bremerton with 13 points and Jensen Bumanglag had 11.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders earned their second Olympic League win of the season by holding the Knights to two points in the final quarter.
Port Angeles led 36-33 entering the fourth and then outscored Bremerton 10-2 in the period.
Nizhoni Wheeler had a solid all-around game for the Riders with 13 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals.
Maddie Boe scored 10 points and had seven steals for Port Angeles, and Emily Johnson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The Riders had 22 offensive rebounds in Monday’s game.
“Offensive rebounds and steals helped us get twice as many shots as did Bremerton in the game, a margin we needed due to another troublesome shooting night: 26 percent from the field,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.
“We had some first-half problems with offensive impatience, combined with some unnecessary fouling. We got better at both in the second half.”
The Riders (2-3, 6-7) open a tough two-game stretch today on the road against league-leading Kingston (5-0, 10-1).
Port Angeles, tied with North Kitsap for fourth in Olympic League 2A, then hosts second-place Olympic (4-1, 8-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.

SEQUIM — The Wolves squandered an 18-point halftime lead at home to the Vikings in Olympic League 2A play.
“NK is a talented team and I give them a lot of credit for never giving up,” Sequim coach Evan Still said of Monday’s game.
“It’s hard to be down 18 at halftime and to come out fighting like they did. They deserved the win tonight.”
The Wolves still led by nine after three quarters but only put up five points in the fourth quarter.
“Statistically, we played well. Our field goal, 3-point and free-throw percentages were up and our turnovers were down,” Still said.
“The one thing that killed us tonight was our defense.
“We were out of position most of the second half, both in our on-ball and help defense. We allowed too many drives to the basket, often resulting in three-point plays.”
Caitlin Stofferahn led Sequim with 16 points in her third game back after recovering from an ACL injury.
Kylee Williams had 9 points and 6 rebounds and Adrienne Haggerty finished with 6 points and a team-high 7 boards.
North Kitsap’s Olivia Selembo topped all scorers with 19, while Rebekah Baugh had 15 for the Vikings (2-3, 6-5).
Sequim (3-3, 6-7) hosts Chimacum (1-1 Olympic League 1A, 2-8 overall) tonight at 7 p.m. before continuing league play Friday against Bremerton.

Jade Blazek and Haley Holgerson led the Loggers with six points and Ryan Lester added five.
