SEQUIM — Kingston started fast in its 61-35 rout of Sequim in Olympic League girls basketball action at Sequim High School.
The Buccaneers led 21-5 after one quarter and added 10 more points to their lead over the course of the remaining three quarters.
“Kingston is a tough team. They shot the ball extremely well, and we didn’t do a good job of contesting shots,” Sequim coach Evan Still said of Wednesday’s game.
“We also struggled from pretty much everywhere.”
The Wolves made only 14 of 45 shots (31 percent) from the field, including 1 of 15 on 3-pointers, and 6 of 21 (29 percent) at the free-throw line.
Adrienne Haggerty came off the bench to lead Sequim with 12 points and seven rebounds.
“I was proud of how our bench played,” Still said.
“Adrienne Haggerty played well. She has stepped up all season and rebounded and scored at times when we needed it most.
“Hailey Lester also played well for us. I thought that she was very aggressive, and that is when she is at her best.”
Lester finished with seven points.
Kylee Williams had two points and tied with Haggerty with a team-high seven rebounds.
Kingston (2-0, 4-1) was led by Drew Clark, who had 21 points.
Sequim (1-1, 4-3) plays at Olympic (2-0, 4-2) today.

PORT ANGELES — The Bulldogs earned a rare win over the Roughriders in Olympic League play.
“Our varsity inexperience showed tonight, as we struggled with North Mason’s size in their 1-2-2 zone, which affected our guards’ court vision,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said of Wednesday’s game.
“We forced passes and failed to use ball movement and dribble penetration to break down their zone.
“That learning will come with time.
“More troublesome was our inability to carry over our energy and resiliency from Monday night’s game at Olympic.
“In that game, we competed with passion throughout the game. We lacked tenacity too often [Wednesday], and an improved and experienced North Mason team took advantage of that.”
Neither team shot particularly well from the field. North Mason made only 35 percent of its shots and Port Angeles made only 25 percent.
The Bulldogs were, however, money from 3-point range, sinking 5 of 10 in the game.
Emily Johnson topped Port Angeles with nine points to go along with four steals and seven rebounds.
Maddie Boe added eight points and seven steals
Sophomore Nizhoni Wheeler led the Riders with eight rebounds and Kiana Robideau grabbed six.
Port Angeles (0-2, 2-4) hosts Anacortes tonight.

MATLOCK — The Rangers struggled from the start in Wednesdays nonleague loss to Mary M. Knight.
“The Owls had a great team of girls that really love basketball and were well organized in all areas of the game,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.
“We couldn’t organize a solidified defensive effort against these girls.
“And offensively we couldn’t get our shots to fall. Our field goal percentage was an ugly 25 percent. We just flat out got beat.”
Megan Weller led the Rangers with 12 points and had seven rebounds and four steals.
Allison Jones and Sammy Rae each had six points. Rae also grabbed 11 boards.
Quilcene (4-2) hosts SeaTac League foe Rainier Christian (1-1, 3-2) today.

BELFAIR — The Roughriders picked up their first Olympic League win of the season thanks to a strong fourth quarter on both ends of the court.
The Bulldogs took a 35-29 lead at halftime with a 25-point second quarter, and held 45-43 lead heading into the fourth.
But Port Angeles held North Mason to six points in the final period while scoring 16 points of its own.
“This was a huge win for us. It was a big-time character test and we showed some mental toughness and bounced back,” first-year Riders coach Kasey Ulin said of Wednesday’s game.
“Give the guys a lot of credit because we came out in the second half and played extremely hard and won the last two quarters 30-16.
“I was very proud of how we stuck together and competed after we fell behind at halftime. We had a spirited halftime talk, and the guys came out and responded.”
Port Angeles’ Bryant Frith led all scorers with 18 points.
“Bryant Frith was the spark off the bench,” Ulin said.
“He came in and hit some huge shots and led us with 18 points. He is a great shooter, and we need to continue to find ways to get him good looks.
“We preach to step up and take advantage of the opportunity in front of you, and Bryant sure did that, coming off the bench and playing well.”
Hunter Hathaway had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Riders, while Lambros Rogers added six points and nine boards.
Grayson Peet had a late scoring burst to finish with 11.
“Grayson Peet scored eight points during a run in the fourth quarter that sealed the game,” Ulin said.
Port Angeles (1-1, 2-1) plays at Klahowya (1-0, 1-6) today.
“Now the goal is to build off this win,” Ulin said.
“We play again [today] at Klahowya, so we hit the road again and try and get a winning streak going.”
