GOLF: Drive for the Cure tourney at Sunland

SEQUIM — Sunland Golf and Country Club will host its annual Drive for the Cure golf tournament and luncheon on Saturday, Sept, 16.

This event is a fundraiser for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation and funds are earmarked for mammograms for area women who lack insurance or the means to pay for the procedure.

An anonymous Sunland donor will provide a $1 match for $3 raised up to last year’s fundraising total, and a $1 for every $1 raised over that amount.

Fundraising avenues include: mulligans and magic putts, a putting contest, raffles for gift baskets and donations with a suggested minimum of $25.

The tournament format is a modified scramble with a 9 a.m. shotgun start for 18 holes of play and an 11 a.m. start time for those playing nine holes. Men and women may sign up as a team of four or sign up individually and the pro shop will make up teams. Mixed teams of men and women are welcome.

Costs are $42 for 18 holes and $32 for nine holes with lunch included. Cart rental is $16 per seat for 18 holes and $10 per seat for nine holes. Non-golfers are encouraged to attend the luncheon which starts at 1 p.m. and costs $15.

The deadline to register is noon Monday, Sept. 11.

SkyRidge scramble

A three-person scramble tourney will be played at SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The event has a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Teams must play two drives and two approach shots by each player.

Lunch, team KPs and a team long putt are included in the price ($90 per team, $30 per player).

A $20 honey pot also is available.

Storm beats Sky

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Breanna Stewart scored 29 points, making two free throws with 15.6 seconds left for a three-point lead, and the Seattle Storm beat the Chicago Sky 85-80 on Sunday.

Seattle rallied to take a 79-78 lead with 3:11 left as Jewell Loyd’s open 3-pointer from the corner capped a 9-0 run.

After Stewart’s makes, Allie Quigley curled around a high screen but her long 3-pointer was off the mark. Seattle’s Noelle Quinn sealed it by making two free throws with 11.2 seconds left.

Loyd added 25 points for Seattle (15-19), which plays at Phoenix on Wednesday night in the first round of the playoffs. Stewart made 10 of 12 at the stripe as the Storm only missed three free throws in 27 attempts.

Kahleah Copper paced Chicago (12-22) with 18 points.
