NEAH BAY — Faye Chartraw might be graduating from Neah Bay in June, but she’ll remain a Red Devil for at least a two more years.
Chartraw signed a letter of intent last week to play basketball for the Lower Columbia College Red Devils.
Chartraw averaged 19.4 points per game and 10.6 rebounds while leading Neah Bay to a fourth-place finish at the Class 1B state tournament last month.
The 5-foot-10 post was named North Olympic League MVP and voted to The Associated Press All-State team. She also was chosen to play in the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-State game.
Lower Columbia, a community college located in Longview, won the Northwest Athletic Conference West Division this season.
The Red Devils placed seventh at last month’s NWAC tournament, which was won by Peninsula College.
Hossack to Dickinson State
Gabrielle Hossack, a 2013 graduate of Port Townsend High School, has signed to play basketball at the four-year level for Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D.
Hossack, a 5-foot-11 forward, played last season season at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham.
“Gabbi is a bouncy and athletic four-spot who can step out and hit that 15-footer,” Dickinson State head coach Mark Graupe said in a news release.
“She picks up things quickly and has good fundamentals. When Gabbi made her visit to DSU, right away our current players noted how much they enjoyed hanging around and being with her.”
The Dickinson State Blue Hawks compete in the NAIA’s North Star Athletic Association.
Former Forks standout and current Port Angeles boys basketball head coach Kasey Ulin played at Dickinson State before embarking on a professional career overseas.
Track and Field
Braithwaite wins conference title
TACOMA — Cameron Braithwaite (Port Angeles, 2012) of the University of Puget Sound topped nine other competitors to win the Northwest Conference Multi-Events last week.
Braithwaite totaled 6,255 points during the two-day event.
The junior also cracked Puget Sound’s top 10 all-time in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 3.25 inches, which was good for first place at Tuesday’s meet.
He also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.46 seconds, placed second in the long jump (21-04) and tied for second in the high jump (5-09.75).
Brocklesby field athlete of the week
BREMERTON — Olympic College sophomore Jayson Brocklesby (Sequim, 2013) was named the NWAC Field Athlete of the Week last week after winning the Western Washington University decathlon earlier this month with 5,661 points.
Brocklesby, along with fellow area graduates Jolene Millsap (Port Angeles, 2014) and Hannah Hudson (Sequim, 2014), also excelled for Olympic at the Spike Arlt Invite at Central Washington University on Saturday.
Brocklesby placed second in the 400-meter hurdles, setting a personal record and automatically qualifying for the conference championships with a time of 56.79 seconds.
He also placed third in the high jump (6 feet, 4.75 inches) and ran with the Rangers’ fifth-place 4×400-meter relay, teaming with Roddrick DeJesus, Hunter Keffer and Kyle Ramsey to set a season-best 3:33.93.
Millsap and Hudson helped Olympic achieve season-bests in a pair of relays Saturday.
Kamina Flemming, Emily Mills, Hudson and Millsap placed fourth in the 4×100 relay with a time of 49.60 seconds.
Mills, Hudson, Kat Ramsey and Millsap took second in the 4×400 relay with a 4:06.88.
Softball
Hopson homers in Texas Tech win
STILLWATER, Okla. — Lea Hopson (Sequim, 2011) hit a three-run home run to help Texas Tech defeat Oklahoma State 9-1 on Sunday.
The homer was Hopson’s team-leading 11th on the season, and it moved her into a tie for 10th all-time in Red Raiders single-season history and eighth all-time 18 career homers.
Baseball
Sullivan drives in run for Wolves
BILLINGS, Mont. — Cody Sullivan (Port Angeles, 2011) drove in a run to help Western Oregon University defeat Montana State 8-3 over the weekend.
Sullivan, a junior outfielder, ranks second on the Wolves with a .330 batting average. He is third with 29 RBIs and tops the team with a .539 slugging percentage.
