BREMERTON — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team had their toughest win in some time, going up against a former teammate, holding on down the stretch to get past Olympic 69-67 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the men had their highest scoring output of the year, shooting 70.3 percent in the second half in a 103-92 win over the Trojans.
The women’s game was a battle for first place in the North Region, with both teams coming in to the game 3-0 in conference play. The Pirates went up against Allie Greene of Neah Bay. After playing for Peninsula last year, she now plays for the Trojans. Greene scored 22 points, and scored seven of those points in the final three minutes of the game to keep Olympic close.
The Pirates managed to maintain a two- to four-point lead down the stretch, never allowing Olympic to take the lead.
Shania Moananu led the team with 18 points, while Ciera Tugade Agasiva had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Jelissa Julmist led the team with 12 rebounds to go along with seven points. Greene’s former teammate at both Neah Bay and Peninsula, Ryana Moss, scored seven points to go with six rebounds. Moss made two free throws near the end of the game that turned out to provide the final margin of victory as Greene hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Greene also finished with six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Peninsula (4-0, 13-2) next plays Skagit Valley (2-2, 10-7) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Port Angeles High School graduate Paige Mason plays for Skagit Valley.
