ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Julia Baeder, Faye Dachs, Willow Harvey, Port Angeles girls wrestling

The Port Angeles girls wrestling team had a remarkable performance at the Hawkins Memorial Tournament held last week in Belfair with four girls going a combined 12-0 with 10 pins and winning their weight divisions.

Faye Dachs at 111-116 pounds won with three straight pins, while Willow Harvey won with two pins and a major decision at 125-130 pounds. Julia Baeder won at 130-139 pounds with a major decision and two falls.

Natalie Johnson also won with three straight pins at 81-100 pounds. She is a previous Athlete of the Week honoree when she won the state championship last spring at 106 pounds at the Washington Wrestling Association’s folkstyle wrestling tournament.

The Port Angeles girls are having a strong season, as is the Roughriders’ boys wrestling team. Both teams will be in action this weekend in Port Angeles in the annual Battle of the Axe tournament, which will also feature teams from East Jefferson, Sequim and Forks.

Athletes of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
