ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Madi Roening, goalkeeper, Port Angeles girls soccer

Madi Roening

Madi Roening was a huge part of the Port Angeles Roughriders winning their West Central District III 2A soccer playoff match against Sequim on Saturday night.

Roening, who has 12 shutouts to her credit this year as the Riders goalkeeper, made five saves to preserve a 1-0 shutout over Sequim, outdueling the Wolves’ outstanding goalkeeper Olivia Hare.

Two of Roening’s saves were truly special. One was a hockey-like “kick save” with her foot on a hard shot by Sequim at the end of the first half on what looked like a certain goal.

On another, she had to jump and tip a high shot off the crossbar, just keeping the ball out on a dangerous chance for the Wolves.

The victory in the Sequim game means the Riders get to stay home for at least one game in the 2A State Tournament. Roening and the Roughriders will play Tuesday at Wally Sigmar Field in their state tournament opener against Sehome.
