Meet the Wolves football, cheer teams tonight Friday Night

SEQUIM — The Sequim Football Booster Club will hold a meet the Wolves event tonight at 7 p.m. at the stadium on West Fir St.

Sequim was scheduled to host Tenino tonight, but the Beavers canceled the game before the season started.

The community is invited to come meet the 2023 football team and cheerleading squad.

Oyster Races Sept. 17

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Oyster Races, featuring a Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K races are set for Sept. 17.

The USATF-sanctioned races are hosted by the Quilcene Historical Museum and raise funds for the Quilcene/Brinnon Dollars for Scholars.

Registration is available at QuilRaces.com.

The Oyster Half-Marathon winds through the hills overlooking Hood Canal and Quilcene Bay. The route starts at Worthington Park, crosses the Little Quilcene river, passes several farms then heads uphill with a total ascent of 1,019 feet and a maximum elevation of 699 feet.

A gravel road takes runners through forest land to a ridge road with panoramic views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, winding back down to a nearly flat run around Quilcene Bay to the finish back at the park.

The half-marathon fee is $60 plus fees.

The Oyster 10K Race is a 6.17-mile course through forest and farmland designed for the intermediate runner, while the Oyster 5K Race (formerly called the Ranger Run) is a 3.11-mile flat jog or stroll along Quilcene Bay.

The Oyster 5K is $40 plus fees and the 5K is $30 plus fees.

Runners/walkers will receive a finisher’s medal, a serving of local oysters after the race and a craft beer for those ages 21 and older.

PA tenni earns sweep

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles boys tennis team opened its season with a 7-0 sweep of Bremerton on Wednesday.

The Roughriders didn’t drop a single set in the decisive victory.

“I thought the guys played really well after getting over some first match jitters,” said coach Brian Gundersen.

Gundersen highlighted the singles players after the match.

“Nathan [Basden], Matthew [Miller], and CJ [Elliott] really got us going early in the match. They were in control from beginning to end,” said Gundersen.

Port Angeles (2-0) earned a forfeit win over North Mason Thursday.

The Riders visit Olympic on Monday.

Little starts strong

BAINBRIDGE — Last year’s Class 2A boys singles state runner-up Garrett Little claimed his first match of the season in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 over Bainbridge’s Garner Hall, but the Wolves fell 6-1 against the Spartans on Wednesday.

Sequim (0-1) visits North Kitsap on Monday.
