UNIVERSITY PLACE — Adam Columbia, Sequim High School graduate, teed off Monday afternoon in the opening round of the 121st Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur Championship at the Home Course in DuPont and Chambers Bay in University Place.
Columbia, who now lives in Lakewood, qualified with his performance in the Washington State Amateur in late June at the Wine Valley Golf and Country Club in Walla Walla. He shot 75, 73, 71 in the three-day tournament. Sean O’Mera, another Sequim High grad and the current coach of the Sequim boys’ golf team, also competed at that event.
A total of 156 golfers competed Monday, from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, Idaho, California and Texas.
The PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship is one of 11 major, regional, amateur championships for men, women, juniors and seniors conducted annually by the PNGA throughout the Northwest.
Monday’s round was held at the Home Course and all subsequent rounds will be held at Chambers Bay, which hosted the U.S. Open in 2015.
First held in 1899, the PNGA Men’s Amateur is one of the oldest amateur golf championships in the world. Tiger Woods is one of the previous winners of the event.
Wilder A at state
PORT ANGELES — The Wilder A Baseball Club has qualified for the Washington State American Legion tournament at Jackson Field in Spokane beginning Saturday.
Wilder A is the No. 1 seed out of the American Legion Area 1 with an 11-1 record (14-11 overall with a lot of nonleague games against older kids). Wilder A consists mostly of eighth- and ninth-graders from Port Angeles, with other players from Forks, Sequim and Chimacum. The team is coached by Jadon Seibel with assistants Landon Seibel and Shane Martin.
Jadon Seibel said what makes this group special “is just the enjoyment and competition they bring every day. I’m pretty impressed so far with these kids.”
Wilder A begins playing at 10 a.m. against the No. 3 seed out of Area 3, which could be either the Trail Orioles or the Medicine Lake DD team.
Discovery Bay women
DISCOVERY BAY — The Discovery Bay Women’s Club has completed its first round of the Captain’s Cup Eclectic championship.
This competition consisted of two 18-hole rounds with the better score of each hole being carded for a complete 18-hole round. The competition is played on the red tees for the gross winner and on the silver tees for the net winner. Each player must complete two 18-hole rounds within a three-date schedule. The second round will be played Thursday.
In addition to the players competing for the championship, a game of the week was played as well. In order to sharpen the players’ focus on each shot, the game of the week was “Disaster.” A demerit point is accumulated for each “mistake” made; e.g. hitting a tree, landing in a bunker, going out of bounds or into a hazard, three-putting a green and so on. The player with the fewest number of points wins the competition.
First place was Wanda Synnestvedt with two points. In a tie for second place with three points were Katherine Buchanan and Jane Peoples. Another tie for third place was carded by Marianne Ott and Cindy Breed.
In a tie for fewest putts of the round were Wanda Synnestvedt and Jane Peoples, each with 31 putts.
Softball tryouts
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Xplosion will be holding girls select fastpitch softball tryouts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shane Park for a 12U team. Anyone who is interested should call Richard Wright at 360-775-0027.
